The Struggle of Love vs. Distraction

The teenage couple walked hand-in-hand, crossing a stone bridge over a rainswelled creek. The heartwarming scene brought back memories of my own first love. Yet, as I drove past, I did a double take. In his other hand, the young man held a cell phone; he was staring at it, not the girl–scrolling away.

The lure of an addictive app is more powerful than young love!

This happens in the spiritual realm, too. I’ve tried to hold God’s unchanging hand, while using my other hand to screen surf the world’s “feed” on my mobile device. (Think listening to the NIV while watching BBC)

The Lord is not amused.

Can both fresh water and salt water flow from the same spring? My brothers, can a fig tree bear olives, or a grapevine bear figs? Neither can a salt spring produce fresh water.

James 3:11-12 (NIV)

James was talking here about praise and cursing coming out of the same mouth, but it also points to a deeper reality.

For the mouth speaks what the heart is full of.
Jesus- Luke 6:45b (NIV)

Kind reader, can you relate? Like the young man, and me (at times) have you held God’s hand, yet been consumed by the love of something else?

The Lord doesn’t double date.

Thank you for reading. 🙏❤️ prayers and love.

Great post, David, and a wonderful wake up call for all.! I do allow distractions to obscure my focus on the Lord at times. Thanks for the reminder, my friend!

The distractions of this world are sometimes brash, and sometimes subtle…either way they are the work of the enemy. May we look forward and upward to Heaven to that glorious meeting someday. Thank you for highlighting this David. God bless you and Nancy today 🙏 🇺🇸🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

If all phones stopped working, there would likely be complete chaos.😫 But, then again, folks might actually start conversing face to face—instead of ignoring each other.

Wonder what would happen if all smart phones suddenly stopped working. lol
There are so many things that can distract our attention away from God these days. It takes intentional focus on our part and reminders from God that he wants our attention.

Thanks, Pastor Pete. I used the double date reference on an earlier post about being over-influenced by our screens. It seemed appropriate to reuse it. Thanks for reading and commenting. God Bless!

Haha and ouch. Love your phrase, ” God doesn’t double date!” Got to find somewhere to use that. Have a blessed weekend Dave.

I’m inspired by one of your solutions, Gary. Every so often one should take a break somewhere that doesn’t have modern distractions.

The potential for distraction has always been around, but it’s probably worse than ever. I find it necessary to be intentional about putting my phone away, at times. Otherwise, the lure to pick it up is almost irresistible. Thanks for stopping by, brother!

Ouch. That stings a little, David. We live lives of distraction. I see this played out on my walks—people together, yet apart, scrolling on their phones. I can’t imagine how God has to compete for our attention. I know at times, He does mine. “Slow down. Take a breath. Be present with Me.” Thanks for this insightful reminder. Blessings.
