Hello, two-legged friends. I’m Buck, a canine from Cana. If you want to know what it was like to live with Jesus, you’ve come to the right place. I followed him everywhere and saw just about everything he did.
Before I joined the Master, I was a stray who was often on the run. But when I met Jesus, at a wedding in Cana, everything changed. Now, I help others run to him–just like I did.
Here’s one thing about living with Jesus: there was never a dull moment. For instance, I was with him when he healed ten guys at the same time! The men were all lepers, which means they had a terrible skin disease that couldn’t get better. Nobody wanted to be around them, so they traveled in packs, just like dogs.
We were on our way to Jerusalem, when the ten lepers came out in front of us on the road. While we were still far away, they shouted, “Jesus, Master, have pity on us!”
I knew they wanted him to heal them, like he had done for so many others. Jesus shouted back, “Go, show yourselves to the priests.”
This meant something amazing was about to happen, so I looked at Jesus and then back at the men, while laughing and wagging my tail.
“Yes, you can follow them to the temple, Buck.”
I ran to catch up with the ten guys, who were also running. My four legs were faster than theirs, so I was next to them in no time!
“Why are you running?” I barked. I don’t think they understood me, but a few of them answered anyway: “We’ve been healed! We’ve been healed!” they screamed, while unwrapping pieces of cloth from around their arms.
Then they all stopped running at the same time, to look at their new skin. “It’s a miracle!” I yelped, jumping up and down. “It’s a miracle!” they said, one after the other. I already said that, silly humans.🐾
“Come on!” said one of the men. “Let’s show the priests, then we can go back to our families.”
“Wait a minute,” I whimpered, looking down the road to my master, and then back to the group. “Aren’t you guys going to thank Jesus for healing you?”
But they all took off again. So, I ran ahead and stopped them in their tracks. “Boof, Boof, Boof!” (Go thank Jesus!). For a few tail wags, all the healed men froze, but then they ran away.
All but one.
The guy who stayed behind knelt on my level, just like Jesus liked to do, and scratched behind my ears. “You’re right, boy. I should go thank the Master for healing me.” The man took off running, but this time back to Jesus, and I trotted along beside him.
“You brought one back, Buck!” said Jesus, with a smile. The man’s face turned red. “I was so excited to be healed that I almost forgot to thank you, Lord. But your dog convinced me to come back.”
“Yes, Buck is quite loyal, and so are you, my friend. Where are the other nine?” Jesus wasn’t smiling any more. “Uh oh,” I whined. “I tried to retrieve them all, but they wouldn’t come back with me.”
“You did what was needed, Buck,” Jesus said. “And so did this man. Go! Your faith has made you well.”
I barked one more time and did a sideways jump,
“Atta boy! Good human.” 🐾
Lesson learned: if Jesus helps you, don’t forget to say thank you.
This piece of historical fiction (the dog part, not the miracle) is dedicated to the memory of the real Buck: a chocolate lab who was a gun dog par excellence. That’s him below, sitting in a duck blind watching his owner for the next command. It was his intense gaze (in the photo) that sparked this story. May each of us look to God with the same level of devotion.

*The story of Jesus healing the ten lepers is from Luke 17:11-19.
