Anchored in Hope: Faith Through Life’s Trials

In 1964, when he was seventeen years old, a young man attended a press conference where Martin Luther King Jr. spoke.

“Meeting Dr. King made me feel like I was part of the solution. He inspired hope and made me want to join him in his righteous crusade,” the man, now 78, said in a recent interview with AARP.

Yet, later that same year, when a protest he attended in Harlem turned violent, the same gentleman recalls how the event, “scared the hope out of me, at least temporarily.”

The guy who told the story above is none other than basketball great, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. Yet, it’s not only the famous (or future famous) who have their highest hopes challenged and almost lost. It’s a familiar story to many of us.

I’m just a regular guy who was tempted to lose all hope but did not. It was God who made the difference.

Regular David (me)

I’ll spare you the details, but 25 years ago my hopes went from sky high to Death Valley low, all in the same year. Like Mr. Abdul-Jabbar, I had the hope scared out of me, at least temporarily.

As a committed Christian, I knew that God’s heavenly hope was more than wishful thinking, but during the Fall of 2000, when I hit rock bottom, the confident expectation that He worked for my ultimate good almost evaporated.

Yet there was still a spark in my soul that said God is always faithful to His own. So, I kept up my daily devotional time, which I’d been spending in Bible study and prayer since I was 15 years old.

One morning, the reading was based on a familiar scripture about confident hope. I’d read it many times before, but today it felt intensely personal.

Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for He who promised is faithful.

Hebrews 10:23 (NIV)

The accompanying commentary provided righteous fuel for the soul-spark I mentioned earlier.

The Christian is personally related to the Lord of the universe, who is sovereign not only over all creation but also over every circumstance we experience.

Henry Blackaby

Kind reader, I’ve been to the brink and back, and am still here to give glory to God, because, as I commented to a blogger friend the other day, The Lord is the greatest hope dealer I’ve ever known.

We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure.

Hebrews 6:19a (NIV)

Thank you for reading. 🙏❤️ prayers and love.

Amen, Brother Chris. I love the scripture from Revelation. It’s not one I’ve thought about in this context, but it fits. Thanks for sharing! God Bless.

So true. God’s Word has often fanned the barely glowing ember of faith at the low points in my life. Revelation 21:7 has spoken to me often, reminding me that with God we can be an overcomer: “He who overcomes will inherit these things, and I will be his God and he will be My son. “

I appreciate the honesty in your posts, David. I’ve been there—tempted to lose hope—and here it came on a rope. 😉 But where I’m stumbling today is—the year 2000. That was 25 years ago?

Thank you for adding your thoughts, Gary. The Lord works in mysterious ways, but also in common ways with His own. Somewhere in the Bible it says, “Let the redeemed of the Lord say so.” I agree that it’s important to keep the ripples going. Blessings!

Thank you for reading and commenting, Cori. It has also been therapeutic for me to be out in God’s creation, which is something you know much about. Hope is indeed like a compass for the soul—always pointing to God’s true north. Blessings!

True. Our stories may differ, but the basic experiences are the same. Live long enough, and the ups and downs of life will be there. Thankfully, God is always near. Thank you for reading and commenting, Malcolm. God Bless!

I’m sure to some I sound like a broken record, as I often tell, and retell my story. However, it’s a tale of God’s great love and care, so I’ll keep telling it. Thanks for reading and commenting, Peggy. God Bless!

Thanks for your sharing David. I have heard this kind of story from many people down through my years. A common thread has been the power of God’s word that reaches and changes us from the inside. My testimony is similar. My quiet time with God and his word has been since I was 15. There is a power behind His word, in his person. He is there. His presence is real but not always felt. Life changing from our innermost being and then outward into our relationships, work ethic and the waves keep going to the other shore. Visible, changing others in their wake.

I’m on the brink, it seems right now, clinging to the edge, trying not to fall off. And I am daily clinging to HOPE! Reminding myself to change my focus and not look down. So thank you for sharing this, it truly does bring me hope, that this is just a season,, and not my future!

Thank you for this reflection. It speaks to a confident Christian hope during difficult times that occur in our lives. As believers, hope gives us purpose and direction. It is born of faith and is a steadfast anchor for the soul. Thank you for that reminder.

So true, Pete. I’ve also heard it said that we should teach from our scars and not our wounds. When you’re in the middle of a storm, it’s hard to do anything but survive. However, later what you’ve learned can be a help to others who walk a similar path. Thanks for sharing. God Bless!

What a beautiful testimony Dave! Thanks. I think that our personal wounds, leave scars, which are our stories, of how it was God and not us that got us through.
