Right Place. Right Time.

Yesterday, at the urgent care clinic, a boy who looked to be 10-12 years old was in the waiting room sitting with his mother. I noticed he was holding a little puppy. It wasn’t a stuffed animal, but a real live miniature dog–licking his face!

When it came time for the boy to go back to the exam room, he wanted to take his puppy along, but the nurse explained that this was against the rules. Mom said, “No problem, I’ll wait out here.” But the nurse said, “Because your son is a minor, you must accompany him to the back.”

The mom hesitated, and then started to walk out the door, presumably to put the young pup in the car. I’d watched the scene unfold from the beginning, and this was no good. “I like dogs,” I offered, “And my wife will be here soon. We can puppy sit for you.”

Surprisingly, the mom agreed. She handed me the wee ball of fur, that appeared to be about six weeks old and followed the nurse with her son.

The cute little guy looked like a baby cattle dog and was certainly frisky and feisty enough to be one. He nibbled on my fingers for a few minutes and turned circles in my lap. And then, just like puppies do, fell fast asleep, with his little head resting on my arm.

When my wife arrived, she was surprised to see me holding a puppy. I told her, “We’re dog sitting for another patient,” and that I would need to trade off with her when the nurse called for me. She agreed, being as big a dog lover as me.

I got called back a few minutes later and handed “Rufus”–he needed a temporary name–to Nancy. She texted about 20 minutes later to say that the pup had been picked up by a very thankful boy and his mom who were finished at the clinic.

For if you remain silent at his time, relief and deliverance for the Jews will arise from another place, but you and your father’s family will perish. And who knows but that you have come to your royal position for such a time as this?

Mordecai to Queen Esther – Esther 4:14 (NIV)

Kind reader, the stakes weren’t as high as Esther’s, but it sure felt like Nancy and I were in the right place at the right time! I thought I was only at the urgent care clinic for my sore knee, but God had additional plans. Little Rufus needed some TLC, and the Lord let us provide it! “God wink” moments like these are the best!

Thank you for reading. 🙏❤️ Prayers and love.

It felt like the right thing to do, and at just the right time, Gary. I used to be in consultative sales, so persuasion
(for a good cause) is right up my alley. Yet, I was surprised when the mom handed over the pup without saying a word. It was definitely a “God wink “ moment!

Thanks! I just started playing with the puppy and talking to him. “What’s your name, little buddy? Is it Rufus? I’m gonna call you Rufus!”

It turns out I have a case of Runner’s knee. I started training for a half marathon and did too much too soon.

I appreciate your reading and commenting. God Bless!

PS. The dogs are doing well. They’re not exactly “click and clack,” but get along well enough. Honey is larger than Quincey and quite a bit younger, too. She isn’t mean to him, but wants to play with him non stop. He tolerates it, but can’t keep up with her. Thanks for asking.

Yes, it is was a serendipitous opportunity, Malcolm. (I’m glad my phone helped me spell serendipitous). He was a cute little puppy, and as someone else said, caring for him took some of the stress out of seeing the doctor. Thank you for stopping by! God Bless!

Training for a half marathon is noteworthy in my book. I only run to the fridge and sometimes the bathroom on occasion. I’ve been recouping my back so haven’t been walking as much (or doing yoga or going to the gym). Anxious to get back in the swing of things. As they say, (I think it was Willie or Waylon) a good hearted woman is hard to find. Thankfully, God blessed us both, brother.

Thank you, Bridget. I’m a natural helper, but I’ve learned to ask folks first if they want help. It was heating up outside and I didn’t want that little guy to be out in a car. Thankfully, the mom handed him to me, with no hesitation. It was a wonderful moment!

I started training for a half marathon, after not running for a few years, and did too much too soon. Yes, Nancy has a good head on her shoulders. She’s wiser and more patient than me most of the time.

Such a wonderful story. The world needs more people who are quick to lend a hand like that. So sorry about your sore knee. I hope it gets better. And how are your two dogs doing?

The Lord has blessed you with a wise woman. Terri would be envious that you can still run. She hasn’t been able to since the pandemic due to her knees. She doesn’t want to do another knee surgery so she’s learning to be content with walking. Blessings.

Thank you, my brother. Nancy once told me, “You don’t have to be a hero to be effective.” At the time, I was going on and on about my next big thing. As it often turns out, it’s the small things that make a big difference to others. My injury turned out to be runner’s knee, caused by running too much too soon.
