Advent Reflections: The Power of Hope and Love

A favorite *story of mine that pairs well with the first Sunday of Advent is about a woman who leaves anonymous notes of encouragement throughout her city.

Elizabeth, a recovering drug addict, wants to help others by spreading hope, something she once desperately searched for herself. So, she writes uplifting notes and tucks them under car windshield wipers or tacks them on poles in public parks.

Every message features the same complimentary closing:

“Much love. Hope sent.”

And hope does not disappoint us, because God has poured out his love into our hearts by the Holy Spirit, whom he has given us.

Romans 5:5 (NIV)

Come to think of it, there isn’t one real drawback, or a single unpleasant side effect of being a participant in, or a purveyor of God’s hope.

Kind reader, heaven’s optimism isn’t passive wishful thinking, but a radical, persistent commitment to wait and work for the good we believe is coming.

Advent Benediction

May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.

Romans 15:13 (NIV)

Thank you for reading. ❤️🙏 Prayers and love.

Thank you Cindy. I appreciate your reading and commenting. Yes, when I first read the story about the lady who leaves hopeful notes, I loved it! She is being proactive, and not waiting for hope to come to her, rather she is spreading it freely. God is the greatest “hope” dealer of all! Blessings to you as well!

I know that hope is a powerful thing. If we lose all hope we enter a dangerous place. But God’s Word will give us hope each day. What a beautiful thing the girl in the story is doing! Blessings, David!

Thanks, Karla! These days we need to go out of our way, both to find hope and to share it.
I’m glad you liked the carol. I’m working on another one for Alan.

Thanks, Bridget! That brought tears to my eyes, and I don’t cry much. I made the first batch of scripture cards for my mother when she was battling cancer. Since then, I’ve made a few more, always writing them by hand. I’m sure I heard about the idea from someone else, but it’s a God thing, anyway. 🤗❤️

I really love this. This reminds me of my friend, David, who also spreads hope. When my father was battling cancer, he sent us Scripture cards that brought us both hope. ♥️😁

Indeed, Malcolm. It’s hard to separate God’s brand of faith, hope, and love. They blend together well!

Thanks, David. My thinking today is around the notion of hope – that without faith it’s just optimism or wishful thinking… ‘Faith is confidence in what we hope for…’ Hebrews 11:1 etc.

Thank you, my brother. As you know, being a helper and encourager in the Lord has its ups and downs, but it’s always profitable for God’s Kingdom. I already have week two in cooperative Advent series ready to go! God is good!!
