What Did Jesus Do in Crisis?

Twenty-something years ago, WWJD? was a popular acronym: What Would Jesus Do?

It’s a great thought, but is this completely discernible in the 21st century?  I’m fairly sure the Son of God wouldn’t post a picture of what He had for breakfast on Instagram, but how can one be certain?

A better question is, What did Jesus do?  This is easily discovered! The scripture below, for instance, records the actual behavior of Jesus in full-blown crisis mode.

“My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death,” He said to them. “Stay here and keep watch.”

Jesus- Mark 14:34 (NIV)

In Mark 14:32-42, we find Him in the garden with a few close friends, emotionally and physically drained by the knowledge of his impending death. The Amplified Bible says he was, “deeply distressed and extremely anguished,” and he, “fell to the ground and prayed.”

Here are two things Jesus did during the biggest crisis of His earthly life:

  • He sought comfort and guidance from God.
  • He asked a few close friends to come near–both physically and in prayer.

Sounds like a winning strategy.

Circle the prayer wagons!

P.S. There’s nothing inherently wrong with asking ourselves, “What would Jesus do?” The Holy Spirit will often fill in the blanks for us in these situations. However, referring back to what Christ actually did–provided we have a record of it–is even better.🤗

Kind reader, thank you for stopping by my little blog. 🙏❤️ prayers and love.

Thank you, Betty. Both versions (WWJD and WDJD) are helpful. Stopping to think about either is a win/win. I hope you and Dan have a blessed day!

Thanks, Pete. I believe I first heard this line from a former pastor at our church.

I love your question, ” What did Jesus do?” That is one we can find out if we really want to know. Thanks Dave. I may steal that line!

What Would Jesus Do, Say, and Think?
He was certainly a man of deep prayer who gathered friends around Himself…what an important point. Thanks for highlighting these points today, as I am prone to forget both aspects are critical to a successful walk of faith.
A man with prayer warrior friends is possibly the richest man in the world.

Has it been 20 years? Oh my! You make a good point, David – on which is the better question. I do think the first – WWJD – could help us reflect on what may be the best path when we are faced with a difficult situation. But you are right – thinking about what Jesus actually did provides solid guidance.

Thanks, brother. Yes, the cold has returned—at least cold for around here. This morning we have a men’s prayer breakfast. About 30 guys turn out every month. Blessings to you and Terri.

Thanks for sharing this thoughtful post, David. When we turn to the Gospels, we learn what Jesus would do by seeing what He did. He gives us ample examples, like what you point out in your post. He depended on God the Father and invited other people to help. Thanks for the encouraging reminder, David. I hope you and Nancy have a blessed day and that you and the pups stay warm if you go for a walk. Chilly weather has apparently moved in.
