Being Still

β€œDavid, be still!” I heard this a lot as a kid.

Usually it was my dad or two older brothers and all they wanted was for me to stop squirming and be quiet.

In fact, when I was six years old one of my brothers offered to give me a dollar to be quiet for 15 minutes.

I did so, and was handsomely paid. My mother told him, β€œThat was expensive.” And my big brother replied, β€œIt was worth it, mom.”

Yet, when God says β€œBe Still” He has something more valuable than money in mind.

Be still and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.

Psalm 46:10 (NIV)

When God asks us to be still, it’s not necessarily because we’re getting on his last nerve. He wants us to press ⏸️ so we can know Him.

God has a purpose (a good one) behind everything He does. But if we’re always in a rush, where is there room for Him to work?

I’ve been mid-prayer before, basically sniveling about something I wanted fixed, when the Holy Spirit said, β€œDavid, be still!”

Yes, Lord.

Speak, for your servant is listening.

1 Samuel 3:10b

Thank you for reading. πŸ™β€οΈprayers and love.

It’s still hard for me, too, Barb. However, the time spent quietly with God is spiritually rejuvenating.

Taking the time to get alone with God is something even Christ didβ€”and He was God’s son! If Jesus needed quiet moments with God, then we do too.πŸ€—

Thank you, Simply B. It’s amazing how God keeps dealing with us in His mercy and grace, even when we aren’t cooperating.

It’s the same with me, Malcolm. It seems that men, in particular, are prone to β€œdo something” rather than wait on God to act.

I find it ironic, David, that for me it’s harder to be still than to be active

Very encouraging words. I, too, am a sniveler. But the rewards of being still and letting God take over have carried me through a lot of difficult seasons. Somehow He doesn’t give up on us, even with our sniveling natures.

David, it is profound to be still and listen to God. He is always speaking and we miss him, when we fail to listen. Thank you! Blessings of hearing God’s voice!

This past year + has shown me a lot about being still and waiting on the Lord. I couldn’t help but wonder what that dollar would be worth today. πŸ˜€
I always appreciate the gentle humility and kind wisdom of your posts, David. You bring the truth home in a way that is receptive and lands well. Blessings to you and Nancy on this Valentine’s Day.

It’s good to hear I’m not the only one. I’ve also done my share of sulking before the Lord. He points that out too.

Thank you, brother. I wrote this post about a year ago, and the need to be still before God is still there. This reminds me to never take the my walk with God for granted. Blessings to you and Susan today, as well. πŸ™πŸ΄σ §σ ’σ ³σ £σ ΄σ ΏπŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ

Thank you for sharing this timely message today brother David. There are times when our prayers need to be silent and still…just being in His presence and hearing His Spirit ministering to our needs. Very often He knows our needs better than we do! May our Father God continue to guide and bless you and Nancy today my dear friend and brother πŸ™ πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡ΈπŸ΄σ §σ ’σ ³σ £σ ΄σ Ώ
