Green Bananas and the Faith to Ripen

My blogger friend Betsy from At Water’s Edge recently shared the story of a cancer survivor who buys green bananas. It’s his way of showing faith in the future.

Sitting at a round table discussion the other day with several other administrators, we talked about the rising and falling tides of public education. I told them about Betsy’s story of the cancer survivor who buys green bananas. My point was to inspire faith in the future of education, but one of my table partners found another angle.

“Hey, we’re all green bananas!” said Ruth, who was recently promoted to head principal. We gave her mostly puzzled looks. She went on, “I feel like I’m still ripening.” Understanding, most of us smiled.

The Bible makes no mention of green bananas, but Jesus talked about something that’s related.

I am the vine, and you are the branches. Whoever remains in me, and I in him, will bear much fruit; for you can do nothing without me. John 15:5 (GNT)

This reality inspires faith in a ripening future, but there’s another angle. It’s in the last seven words of the scripture: “for you can do nothing without me.”

Kind reader, like me, have you considered how ripening in Christ is a God-governed reality?

Thank you for reading. 🙏❤️ Prayers and love.

    Now I want a banana 🙂
Only by abiding in Jesus can we have and show the fruit of the Spirit.

Excellent post David which reminds me of a t-shirt that said “be patient, God isn’t finished with me yet!” How truly your post echoes these words; we are all still under construction in Christ. God bless you and Nancy today 🙏 🇺🇸 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

Enjoyed all the connections to fruit and ripening. And especially the connection to the vine where our growth comes from. Thank you for sharing, and inspiring, David! 😊 Wonderful post.

Thank you, Karla! I want to stay not too green or not too ripe, but just right—spiritually, personally, and professionally. Thank you for setting such a great example of faith under difficult circumstances!

Thank you, Malcolm. My head principal often talks about how we should never stop becoming more competent—both professionally and personally.
