When Life’s Letters Get Scrambled

One recent Christmas season, the most endearing little yard signs popped up all over town: “Santa, please stop here.” Yet on Christmas Eve, a rather diabolical Grinch came, under the cover of darkness, and rearranged the letters on several signs: “Satan, please stop here.”

Such is life. Have you ever expected Santa and, through no fault of your own, gotten Satan? I have. And it feels like a surprise punch in the gut. A few letters, changed in the middle of the night, can shake one’s faith to the core.

Kind reader, here’s the good news–proven by many a true believer’s experience: it doesn’t matter if Santa or Satan stops by, because God also delivers! In fact the Bible says the Lord draws closer to those who’ve been sucker-punched by life.

The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.

Psalm 34:18 (NIV)

If this is you, you’re in good company. Hold on, hold out, and have faith. Because the God who created this planet isn’t going anywhere!

    You brought to mind a particularly dark chapter in my life when it did seem Satan had delivered a “gift” I didn’t want and didn’t think I deserved or needed. But you are so right, David. GOD delivered too! He came especially near and blessed me in numerous ways through scripture, other readings, songs, people, circumstances, and more. Praise God for his loving, attentive, and gentle care during times of pain!

    Thank you for your insightful post. The human experience is often a difficult road and Christians don’t get an E-Z Pass. At some point in our lives, I think (with God’s help, effort and experience) we can get to a point where we will be able to say, as Jesus did, “you could have no power over me unless God allowed it.” At least, I’m hopeful about that. God always has a good reason for allowing something. It’s my faith that it builds character and compassion for others going through difficulties, but that doesn’t make it easy to experience hardships. I guess in those times, it’s encouraging to read what others (like David) had to go through and the words that comforted them.

    Yes! That’s a great hymn about how God protects and provides. Students return in August 13. Administrations have been in mostly “sit and get” meetings since July 13.

    My pleasure, brother. Things definitely can change on a dime. It’s interesting (I think anyways) that it seems to take longer to go from bad to good than it does to go from good to worse. But maybe that’s just my perception. Gas prices go up much faster than they go down. Blessings!

    Good post reminding us of our Eternal Father and Saviour, who are forever close and meeting our needs. I must admit in my adulthood I have never looked at Santa the same way when someone pointed out his anagram name; anyone that is a worldly substitute for our Lord is always suspicious.
