God’s Generosity

I picked up this button during suicide prevention week, back in September.

One of my favorite phrases is, “Everyone matters if anyone matters at all,” so a button that basically says the same thing went straight on my backpack.

And then I noticed the light blue symbol in the middle. “What’s that, a sideways wink?” I said to myself. “Ah, it’s a semicolon! Cool. 😎

. Periods have a finality about them—like ending one’s life. ; But a semicolon, though connected to the thought before, is the ultimate second chance—a way to continue the conversation.

Jesus had many second chance talks with folk. The story of the woman at the well (John 4:1-26) is my favorite.

She was a Samaritan (strike 1), and a woman (strike 2), and an outcast (strike 3), yet Jesus said this to her:

Everyone who drinks water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst. Indeed, the water I will give him we come in him, a spring of water welling up to eternal life.

John 4:13-14 (NIV)

Kind reader, Jesus is still giving out this same Living Water today. And He does not discriminate. Whosoever will may come.

Taste and see that the Lord is good; blessed is the man who takes refuge in him.

Psalm 34:8

Thank you for reading. 🙏❤️ prayers and love.

When we see someone with the semi colon tattoo it means they have thought about suicide but chose not too. With Jesus we always have hope

Oh wow David. I like seeing the semicolon as a second chance and how you have connected that to the second chances given to us by Christ.

Thank you for reading and sharing, brother. You also used a semicolon to good effect. I will look up the gospel song you mentioned. I believe I’ve heard it before, and will check to make sure. Blessings to you and yours. Prayers for Scotland.🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

    Love this – thanks David.

I do so love a semi-colon; they make my life better; they let my ramblings continue in some sort of organised manner; they continue the conversation……. 😉

He doesn’t discriminate, but we do. Worse yet, us Christians do. I literally just read a post prior to clicking on this one that used the woman at the well passage. Are we(us Christians) looking at each other and calling each other Samaritans? I’m not talking about you specifically as you have been accepting of me, but I am talking about some other Christians. There is too much of “Oh, you don’t look like the Christian I think you should look like and I’m not going to get to know you so I can see who you really are in Christ. And while we are at it, as long as you agree with what I have to say, we will be on good terms.” going on in Christiandom. Its making me sick and angry and mouthy. I know my value in Christ, why some others can’t see it is beyond me. And when they don’t want to discuss it….I just don’t handle that well….I’m still a work in progress so maybe next year or in five years or whenever I will handle it better, but for now…….pray for me, thanks.

Oh, how I hated grammar…and yet my friend Dave is able to teach me a great lesson from a semi-colon! Thanks brother and have a wonderful week, both before and whatever punctuation mark comes your way!

Thank you, David, for another inspiring post. And a P.S. continuing the living water theme from yesterday and today – The St. Louis Cardinals gave Adam Wainwright a gift yesterday – a $100,000 donation to Adam’s project to build wells in Honduras. Another player, Chris Carpenter, told of a specific date when he came to the clubhouse and found a Bible in his chair, left there by Adam. He said it changed his life. Living waters, for sure! And so refreshing to my spirit, too. Have a great day, David.

I don’t think I have ever read a post about a semicolon before; but you use it well as does the badge you retrieved. I suppose you could describe it as the condition for hope; certainly the story of the Samaritan woman at the well of Sychar is one of great hope, then and also now. This story is a favourite of mine too and the gospel song based on it “There Is A River.” Thank you for sharing this and brightening my Monday, God bless you today brother 🙏

    I don’t have any tattoos—surprising, I know—but if I did a semi-colon might be one I’d get.
I love the story of the Samaritan woman. It’s such a rich example of God’s grace. Good post.
