When You’re God’s Child, it’s Enough

The student’s hoodie had an inspirational message: “Never Give Up. Keep the Enthusiasm.” With the young man’s permission I took a picture, but one letter of the message was missing.

This may sound peculiar, but I’ve learned to interpret such coincidences as messages from God. “Never Give U.” What does it mean?

A little Bible digging brought me to the second chapter of John. The story starts with Jesus turning water to wine (his first miracle), which brought him positive attention. Next, He creates a ruckus in the temple courts, turning over the money changer’s tables and chasing folks out with a homemade whip. This brings him negative attention, and a challenge to his authority from his fellow Jews.

In Cana, Christ was cheered, and in Jerusalem He was booed. Yet the miraculous power of God flowed through Him unchanged.

Now while he was in Jerusalem at the Passover Feast, many people saw the miraculous signs he was doing and believed in his name. But Jesus would not entrust himself to them, for he knew all men. He did not need man’s testimony about man, for he knew what was in men.

John 2:23-25 (NIV)

The story is told of the legendary American baseball player, Babe Ruth, that he always tipped his ball cap to the crowd–whether he hit a home run or struck out. When the fans cheered for him, or when they booed, his reaction was the same.

Jesus, and the Babe were both on to something. They cared what others thought, but not that much. Each of them had a job to do, regardless if the days were good or bad. And they didn’t tie their personal worth to the fickle opinions of others.

Kind reader, keep the enthusiasm and never give u. Translation: God’s love for us is both infinite and unconditional. So don’t lose yourself in the judgment or expectations of others–whether positive or negative. When you’re His child, it’s enough.

PS. Do you need to be reconciled to God? Jesus Christ is the way! Confess your inability to save your own soul, and fully trust Him today. This is how to become friends with God and spend forever with Him in heaven.

For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.

John 3:16 (NIV)

Thank you for reading. 🙏❤️ prayers and love.

Indeed, it is a difficult place to reach. Pretending I don’t care at all, what others think, is disingenuous, but caring too much feels the same way. Thank you for being a frequent reader and commenter. God Bless!

I didn’t know part of the writing on the hoodie was missing until later—when I looked at the photo.

It’s informative how you said learning to trust one’s own barometer is a skill to learn and practice. Many of us aren’t programmed to find the good, but we can learn to think that way. Thanks for sharing, Angie. Your experience is most valuable!

Truth! I’ve been tested this week on this very principle. I find it easier to say than do. Thanks for sharing, brother Matt!

Great analogy. I like the parallel. I think not putting too much stock in what other people think is a skill to learn and practice. In my therapy sessions with teens, we work on that premise. Believe in yourself, train your brain to accept positive affirmations despite the negativity that abounds. Thanks for the reminder!

Wow! I look forward to that post. You may want to watch his retirement ceremony on Youtube. Especially the part where Chris Carpenter speaks. It touches my heart that you would write about Adam. Thank you, David, and good luck with the post!

I think that’s a difficult place to reach – to care what others think, but not that much. And yet it’s the best way to live. At the end of the day, we live before an audience of one: our loving, gracious and merciful Father. Thank you for inspiring me to keep this in mind. Have a great week!

Our world doesn’t tend to think in terms of eternity. No doubt, the forces of evil encourage this. Yet the true value you mention is found only in God’s redemptive plan for fallen humanity. Thanks for faithfully reading and commenting, brother!

Love this post, David. Our worth is not based on the opinion of others. This is one reason why I pray for discernment. P.S. A teammate described Adam Wainwright, my favorite baseball player, as being the same every day in the clubhouse – whether he won or lost. He was always the same. Enjoy your Sunday!

Thank you, Nicola. I thought about the “always give Jesus, not you” aspect, but decided to focus on not losing oneself to the changing opinions of others.
I hope it’s been a sunny Sunday in the UK. God Bless!

Your post reminds me of a phrase: “and you can take that to the bank” referring to the real value of words or ideas, meaning that their value will stand the test of others and of time. You highlight precisely the only thing that can “be taken to the bank” – a relationship with God through His Son Jesus Christ, our Lord and Saviour.

I agree that our personal worth is not tied to the fickle opinions of others. Our personal worth is tied to God’s infinite and unconditional love.
