A Little Something in Your Pocket

Halfway through kindergarten music class, the call comes over the walkie-talkie: “Mr. Duncan, I need your help in room B202.”

I acknowledge and head that direction, not knowing quite what to expect. Such is the life of an elementary school administrator.

I reach the classroom door, with master key in hand, and already hear a clue: “Give me back my Little Kitty!” screeches a six-year-old in distress. Just then, a young boy bursts through the door—running smack dab into me. “Oops, slow down young man,” I say, nonchalantly. “What’s going on here?”

It turns out that Little Kitty is a small toy that Little *Kyle brought to music class without permission. At some point, the mini figurine came out and became a distraction. So, the music teacher confiscated it.

“You two are coming with me,” I say to the wee lad, as his teacher hands me the contraband toy. The youngster follows me to my office. I don’t look back. I know he’s still there because I have Kyle’s toy and he wants it.😉

Sitting across from him, at my round table, I remind the youngster that toys from home are not normally allowed at school. “Why did you bring this to music class?” I query, holding up the small plastic cat between my thumb and index finger.  “I have lots of toys from home–in my backpack–he declares. “Little Kitty was the only one who fit in my pocket.”😂

The two-inch-tall plaything sits on my desk for the rest of the day, while Kyle reluctantly goes back to class. “You’re the only one who fit into his pocket, huh?” I’m smiling now and talking to a toy.🤠

I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you.

Psalm 119:11 (NIV)

Kind reader, I’ve written Bible verses down by the backpack full, yet it’s the ones I keep in my pocket (heart) that are closest at hand. What are some favorites you’ve memorized, and how have they helped you in your walk with the Lord?  Please share in the comments!

Thank you for reading. 🙏❤️ prayers and love.

*Kyle isn’t the child’s real name.

Bonus Thought:

If you immerse yourself daily in the Word of God, you will not be caught off guard when crises come. Your focus will already be on God, and He will safely guide you through your difficult moments.”

My adventures are fewer and farther between, now that I don’t teach kindergarten music daily. But I still get some child-like wisdom now and then.

Romans 15:13 “May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust Him so that you will overflow with confident hope through the power of the Holy Spirit.” It’s my life verse, and I’ve found that the key is “as you trust Him”. We all want joy & peace, especially when life is dark and gloomy, but trust is the catalyst. This verse has carried me through some deeply sad times. It really is important to hide the Word in our hearts. The 23rd Psalm is another of my night time scriptures when I am struggling to sleep. Praying scripture is good for the soul. The Word is alive and active and sharper than a two-edged sword.

Thank you. Kids (especially young ones) have few filters and just say what’s on their minds. Sometimes they even speak for God—the like young prophet Samuel did. Thank you for reading and commenting. God Bless!

David, this is such a precious story! It made my heart and soul smile (and I giggled thinking of all the things I “confiscated” over the years, lol). What a perfect parallel of “hiding” and tucking God’s word in our pocket.

My verse is, “This is my command–be strong and courageous! Do not be afraid or discouraged. For the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.” Joshua 1:9

My family and friends say, “You are strong.” I don’t feel strong. I’ve been sad. And tired and lonely. Scared, confused, and hopeless at times. I “keep my eyes on Jesus, the champion who initiates and perfects our faith…(Hebrews 12:2)

SO, “But when I am afraid, I will put my trust in you.” Psalms 56:3

“Imitate God, therefore, in everything you do, because you are his dear children. Live a life filled with love, following the example of Christ. He loved us and offered himself as a sacrifice for us, a pleasing aroma to God.” Ephesians 5:1-2

Sometimes, I stink AND I’m scared. My body and mind don’t cooperate. I’m learning my “new normal” which makes for much inconsistency. Jesus NEVER changes! I praise God for that!

God bless you and ALL YOU DO, David. Thank you for being a Godly leader and friend to many!

Love the story, David, and the analogy of having “pocket” verses that we can carry and pull out when needed. One of mine is Jeremiah 29:11. Thanks for sharing!

“For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

    Romans 8:38-39

“Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.”

    Matthew 6:34

“There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear.”

    1 John 4:18

“What good will it be for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul?”

    Matthew 16:26

Thanks for sharing these thoughts, David! It was interesting to reflect on what my favorite verses are that I carry in my pocket.

I haven’t actually remembered these word for word, but I know exactly how they make me feel and how they turn my feet in the right direction. I hear parts of them in my head, and it’s enough to bring it all back. ❤️

One verse that means so much to me is Matthew 28:20 where Jesus says He will be with His disciples always. Years ago, my daughter who was 11 at the time called me at work and said, “Mommy, I think Daddy is dead.” He was accidentally killed at home and my daughters came home and found him. As I thought “How am I going to raise two little girls alone?” this verse came to my mind immediately. I would be able to face this because Jesus would be with me.

My anxiety left when I cried out to the LORD for His help and I had a wonderful day. We were each victorious because HE lives! He is our Counselor, Advocate, Rescuer, and so much more.

David, you have a great Resurrection Sunday too.

Thank you for sharing a play-by-play account of how spiritual warfare often happens, Manette Kay. I was in much the same place this afternoon when I learned of some troublesome news. The thought came to me, “It’s no use to to fight evil anymore.” Shortly though the Holy Spirit reminded me this was the voice of the enemy. I went straight to my Bible and found Isaiah 59:19:

“ When the enemy comes in like a flood, the Spirit of the Lord will lift up a standard against him. “

I then said a prayer for God’s deliverance. Almost instantly, the weight was lifted!

Thank you again for sharing. Happy Resurrection Day!

Earlier today, I was wrestling with some anxious thoughts. When that happens they can quickly spin out of control and I know that is just what the enemy tries to do. I had to pull truth out of my pocket and speak it out loud, “. . .Take every thought captive to obey Christ” (2 Corinthians 10:5).

Then I asked God to help me lock up the anxious thoughts (as in make the thoughts prisoner) confessing that I can’t do it alone. I reminded the enemy that he had no real power so he might as well leave me alone and get out of my presence because God is mightier and more powerful than he, and God’s spirit resides in me therefore he [Satan] will not win.

David, you are a wonderful influence to your students. And I’m certain a great example to the staff you work alongside.

“I’ve written Bible verses down by the backpack full, yet it’s the ones I keep in my pocket (heart) that are closest at hand.” This an incredibly profound reflection on scripture memorization, David! Thank you little Kyle and Little Kitty for being such an inspiration. My favorite pocket verse, when pulled out completely distracts me from doing something I’ll later regret, is Psalms 141:3, “Set a guard over my mouth oh Lord; keep watch over the doors of my lips.”

Thank you for pointing out how scripture memorization and prayer can work together hand and hand, Bridget. This prompts me to think more about how the scriptures and prayer supported Jesus—during his time here on earth. Thank you for sharing, and happy Resurrection Sunday!

What a great story and takeaway. Keeping God’s Word tucked in our pockets is so powerful. It’s one of our greatest tools (along with prayer). May we remember to keep it a top priority in our lives. I love that you added a bonus thought! I have many favorite Bible verses. Psalm 91 is something I had to memorize as a kid and I still hang onto it today.

I love your illustration, and admire both the patience and humor of an elementary school teacher (or principal)! Yes, having the word of God handy in the heat of the moment has saved me from messing up even further on more than one occasion. Happy Easter to both you and your family Dave.

I love both the verses you shared, brother Eric!

The Jeremiah passage is especially one I could memorize, as I like short passages.

One of my favorites is, “Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer.” Romans 12:12

Have a blessed Easter, my brother!

When life gets hard I lean more on key verses…they’re little atomic weapons against temptation. Two of my favorites are:

“Behold, I am the Lord, the God of all flesh. Is there anything too hard for Me?”
    Jeremiah 32:27

    “Have you not known?
    Have you not heard?
    The everlasting God, the Lord,
The Creator of the ends of the earth,
    Neither faints nor is weary.
    His understanding is unsearchable.

He gives power to the weak,
And to those who have no might He increases strength.”
    Isaiah 40:28-29

Bless you today brother, you AND Little Kitty.😉
