Colors

Picture over 1300 children, along with their parents and teachers, running through clouds of brightly colored powder. This past Friday was my school’s annual color run!

At the end, most of our students, grades pre-kindergarten through fifth, were covered from head to toe with neon shades of blue, pink, green, red, yellow, and orange.

I, however, remained color-free, as during the race I ran the sound system and relayed information, coming over the walkie-talkie, to the announcer.

Several who saw me after the event commented that my white tee-shirt was almost totally clean. I had managed to avoid getting painted with color—due to my center parking lot location.

Later, as I walked into the building, my tennis shoes left a neon green trail of footprints. What?!

Crossing the track, I inadvertently trekked through left-over colored powder.😮

For some reason this reminds me of the disciples’ dirty feet at the Last Supper.

As dinner is served, Jesus starts washing everybody’s feet. Peter will have none of it. So, Jesus says something to the effect, “If you want to truly follow me, you’ll allow this.” In response, Peter says, again I’m paraphrasing, “Then, give me a bath, Lord!” And Jesus says this:

A person who has had a bath needs only to wash his feet; his whole body is clean.

John 13:10a (NIV)

The disciples (except Judas) were right with Jesus—in the main—but there was still something not quite correct. Their dirty feet left a spiritual neon green trail of pride, as they preferred arguing about who was the greatest more than the humble act of foot washing.

Kind reader, like me, can you relate? We may not be covered, from head to toe, with the colors of the world, but a dusting on our feet is all it takes to impact our fellowship with God and others. The struggle is we don’t always see our degree of separation from His perspective.

Remember the height from which you have fallen! Repent and do the things you did at first.

Jesus—Revelation 2:5 (NIV)

Thank you for reading. 🙏❤️ prayers and love.

Nancy wouldn’t have let me past the utility room! I’ve run before, and been colored from head to toe, but not this time. It’s always a lot of fun, though!

You should have joined the fun and run through the colors. I am sure your wife would have been thrilled to see you come home ready to get the colored dust all over the furniture 🙂

Thanks, Peggy. It was a lot of fun, even thought I didn’t get covered in color.

I hear you on the nearsighted view, Rainer. Seeing things from an eternal perspective can be hard, especially when our world has a here-and-now philosophy.

Great post, brother. It’s hard to see things from God’s perspective at times. At least that’s true for me. I’ve got to pull back from my myopic view and remember how far God has brought me. Man, that is a ton of kiddos! Looks like it was a fun event.

Once again you’ve taken my analogy and expanded it: “Just a thought.”🤗 I love the fire truck = the Holy Spirit comparison!
    Blessings, my brother.

    Love this buddy

And I think I’d have been offering to help with the sound system…. 😁

What a fab and fun day from start to finish.

And what a brilliant image of how, every single one of us, are gonna do stuff that is bad.

But yey for that Holy Spirit fire truck to wash off our sin when we simply present ourselves to Jesus

It’s a powerful image David. Your feet leaving a colour trail behind and you not realising you had stepped in the colour…thanks for this post.

Yes, David it is so important to have your feet clean. This reminds me of Psalms 24:4 Amplified “He who has clean hands and a pure heart, Who has not lifted up his soul to what is false, Nor has sworn [oaths] deceitfully.” Those with a pure heart and clean hands see God. The feet are easily washed. The students must have really enjoyed themselves!

Yes, it is! The kids enjoy it so much, and our PTA gives every student a tee-shirt and lets them run for free.
Thank you for your encouragement, Crystal. God Bless!

There was color everywhere, Pete! Some of the younger kids were lying down in it and making “Powder Angels.” Afterwards, everyone takes turns getting sprayed down by a fire truck, which washes most of the color away.

I had never thought of that … our degree of separation from God’s perspective. Something to take to heart. On a different note, I wish I had gone to your school. You make it such a fun time for the kids 🙂 Beautiful, treasured, lasting memories.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts. I’m glad what I hoped to say came through.
Yes, inner reflection, with help from the Holy Spirit, opens our eyes to any separation from God.
I almost included this scripture verse—as a reminder for myself and others:
“Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me and lead me in the way everlasting.” Psalm 139:23-24.

PS. Our school color run is a highlight of the year—literally!

What a fun event for the kids and their families.

Thanks for sharing these thoughts, David. This line in particular really struck me – “The struggle is we don’t always see our degree of separation from His perspective.”

Wow! I’ve never thought of it that way. But it’s true. We can’t rely on where we “think” we are, and pride gets mixed in too.

Do you think when we reflect on our inner state and its health(peace, gratitude, love, etc) we can get a more accurate sense of our distance from Him?
