Paws and Reflect (9): Out on a Limb

Howdy, two-legged friends! Itโ€™s me, Buckโ€”a dog who followed Jesus.

Last time, I told you about how my best friend healed a blind man who called out to him on the Jericho Road. It looked like Jesus would keep on walking, that is until I ran back to the guy and howled for help. You probably wonโ€™t see my version of the story in the history books, so please read it here.

Would you believe, not far up the same road, there was another man who really, really wanted to meet Jesus? I know, lots of people needed his attention, but this guy was up in a treeโ€”like a cat!

And I got there first.๐Ÿพ๐Ÿพ

One look and one sniff told me this man was not a beggar. His leather sandals, purple clothes, and sweet-smelling perfume said he was rich, very rich.

โ€œAtta boy, Buck! You treed a tax collector.โ€ It was Jesusโ€™ friend, Matthew, who used to be one. โ€œZac, what are you doing up there?โ€

โ€œOh, do you want him on the ground?โ€ I barked โ€œI can help with that!โ€

I jumpedโ€ฆjumpedโ€ฆjumpedโ€ฆtrying to bite the fringe on the bottom of his fancy tunic.

โ€œCall off your dog, Matthew!โ€ he wailed. โ€œThat’s not my dog,โ€ he chuckled.

โ€œ Heโ€™s mine,โ€ said a firm voice, coming up from behind. โ€œBuck, down!โ€ It was Jesus! Folks, old Buck dropped on his brown belly and didnโ€™t look up.

โ€œI just wanted to see you,โ€ said the guy in the tree, sounding relieved.

“Zacchaeus,โ€ said my pack leader, โ€œCome down right now. I must stay at your house today.โ€

How many used-to-be tax people do we need? I was trying to get (whatโ€™s his name?) out of the tree. Thatโ€™s what I was thinking, but the rich man didnโ€™t think twice. He came right down and welcomed Jesus, and all of us, with open arms.

Iโ€™m standing up now, laughing and wagging my tail, but most of the crowd isnโ€™t happy. I hear grumbling, โ€œDoesnโ€™t Jesus know this crook is a tax collector? Heโ€™s going to a sinnerโ€™s party.โ€

โ€œHold it, people,โ€ I yelped. โ€œEveryoneโ€™s naughty, now and then. Any friend of Jesus is a friend of mine!โ€

Over at Zacโ€™s big stone house, I laid down out in the walled courtyard. There must have been quite a feast going on inside, because someone brought me a whole lambโ€™s leg! โ€œIโ€™m really starting to like this guy,โ€ I thought, chomping.

I was just about finished, when out came Matthew with Zac. They must have known each other before. Matthew starts telling his friend about how Jesus changed his whole life, and how he doesnโ€™t live for money anymore.

He knew they were talking about him, because here came Jesus, with a whole party full of people. Zac stood up tall in front of everyone.

โ€œLook, Lord! Here and now I give half of my possessions to the poor, and if I have cheated anybody out of anything, I will pay back four times the amount.โ€

Jesus smiled, looking at Zac, and then said to everybody, โ€œToday salvation has come to this house, because this man, too, is a son of Abrahamโ€ Then, he reminded the crowd about what he does for a living:

Yep, thatโ€™s my best friend, and he said I was his dog!

This piece of historical fiction (the dog part, not the miracle) is dedicated to the memory of the real Buck: a chocolate lab who was a gun dog par excellence. Thatโ€™s him below, sitting in a duck blind watching his owner for the next command. It was his intense gaze (in the photo) that sparked this story. May each of us look to God with the same level of devotion.

Photo used with permission from Buck’s owner. Scripture added by Beth Alisan.

Look to the Lord and His strength. Seek His face always.

Psalm 105:4

*The story of Zacchaeus the tax collector is found in Luke 19:1-10.

A special thanks to Beth Alisan, from lessonsfromalab, for helping make this story possible. Hereโ€™s a link to her post about Buck: A Moment With Our Creator: Psalm 105:4

Thank you for reading. ๐Ÿ™โค๏ธ prayers and love.

Yes! It would/will be wonderful to meet in heaven those who had close encounters with Jesus. Iโ€™m sure there is more to their stories, and enjoy imagining Buckโ€™s perspective. Thank you for reading and commenting, Nicola. Have a blessed Sunday!

Another great doggy tale, David. I love reading these stories of Buck. They help me think more about these incredible events in Jesusโ€™ ministry and about the wider dynamic for the people involved. Who knows perhaps one day we might meet the actual Zaccheus and hear his story. ๐Ÿ˜Š

Thank you, Bridget! Buckโ€™s NT era doggie observations and opinions are pure fiction, but could have easily happened. As I mentioned to Alan, tax collectors were probably members of a lonesome fraternity, back in those daysโ€”they knew each other. I appreciate you stopping by and sharing too! God Bless.

This is one of my favorite Bible stories. But I always love hearing the stories from Buckโ€™s point of view. It helps me see different angles that I had not thought of. Thank you, David!

Thank you, brother. I reasoned that two relatively local tax collectors might be familiar with each other in New Testament times. I appreciate your reading and commenting. ๐Ÿ™May you prosper, as your soul prospers. ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿด๓ ง๓ ข๓ ณ๓ ฃ๓ ด๓ ฟ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ

I hear Buck as an old cowboy, telling his story, and I like how Zacโ€™s voice is a clear contrast: Call off your dog, Matthew. ๐Ÿ˜

Yet again another excellent retelling of a familiar Bible story from Buck, thank you David. I was reading this one quite recently but you brought out another angle in the story regarding Matthew and Zaccheus. Thank you for these precious doggy devotionals! Thanks, Pastor Pete. It occurred to me that I sometimes want to sign Jesus up for things that arenโ€™t his main job.

I loved that phrase, “And then He reminded the crowd what He does for a living!” Ha! What a wonderful way to describe our Savior!
