A Little Way Through Small Days

Fellow blogger, Deb Farris, had me nodding my head recently with her post, The Little Way Through: One Writer’s Morning.

She’d gone out to the front porch swing, accompanied by her loyal Goldendoodle, to reflect and write. But her anticipated time of deep work was repeatedly interrupted by lawn mowers and leaf blowers and workers sawing on concrete next door.

Determined to persevere, Deb pressed on, despite sneezing twice—from the cement dust. Finally, enough was enough; she retreated inside to eat pancakes with her husband.

Naturally, this post was about developing patience. How do we react when things don’t go as planned?  Deb pointed toward the answer with a quote that had me nodding again:

There’s a little way through these small days of mine.

St. Therese of Lisieux, from Story of a Soul.

Now that’s deep! Could the “little way,” be the unwavering path of childlike faith? Deb thinks so, and I agree. It’s rare to meet a cynical preschooler. My mind also went to the words of Christ:

Enter by the narrow gate. For the gate is wide and the way is easy that leads to destruction, and those who enter by it are many. For the gate is narrow and the way is hard that leads to life, and those who find it are few.

Matthew 7:13-14 (NIV)

Kind reader, it takes patience and persistence to walk God’s thin trail, but it’s the only one that leads to heaven.

He knows the way I take; when he has tested me, I will come forth as gold.

Job 23:10 (NIV)

Thank you for reading. 🙏❤️ Prayers and love. And thank you, Deb for the inspiration!

Love the quote and the verses and the reminder that God helps us through it all, the small and the big stuff.

Any time before the unnatural noises start. That’s my happy place. If it clashes with God’s creation, it hurts my creativity.

You’re welcome, Bridget. Pastor Pete posted today about not sweating the small stuff. I loved his thought that only three things will fit into our heavenly suitcase—faith, hope and love. Everything else is small stuff we can let go. God knows your heart and that’s what matters most, sister!

I’m glad you had increased traffic to your site today, Deb! I love it when bloggers inspire each other, and you certainly got me thinking—so much so I canceled my previously scheduled post and wrote this one the night before.
There’s a humanness (for lack of a better word) that comes out in your writing that readers connect with. Your experience on the porch reminded me of when I’ve felt the same way, and I turned this feeling into a related post, but from a slightly different angle—using the St. Therese quote as a way point.
You are most welcome for the shout out; it is much deserved!
    Don’t doubt those scribbles. 🤗

Thank you, David. I needed this reminder. This week I had some small grievances pop up that I didn’t handle well. I’m so glad the Lord doesn’t give up on us. Great post, my brother!

David, When I worked I got up at 4:00 AM to pray and read the Bible for several hours before work. It was wonderful. That’s actually how I start s writing. Todd would bring me coffee and I had no distractions. It seems I go to bed earlier and sleep later now that I am, well, I never use the word, retired, so I’ll say instead, now that I am a writer (or weee scribe as your friend Alan K, calls it. I just love that.) But I keep saying I’m going to get up at 4:00 again! How about 5:30…? ❤️

David! Now I know why I’ve had some wonderful new visitors to my blog today! I so easily get discouraged (I’m sorry to admit) and you just don’t know how much what you did means to me. But God surely does! He just doesn’t give up on me. ❤️ It brings tears at the end of this Saturday when I was feeling a little insecure about my scribbles this morning. Maybe there’s more there than I realize. Or maybe it is what it is and there is someone that needs to hear it. That’s the best, isn’t it? We might never know for sure but then God brings along enough reassurance for us to keep going, or following, I should say. Thank you so much. Sending a huge hug! ❤️

Agreed, brother. The Christian life is not a “flowery beds of ease” journey. Thanks for stopping by. 🙏His best to you always.

True! In her post, Deb tells how her husband, Todd basically lured her in with the promise of pancakes. He knew she was frustrated, and did the perfect “hubby” thing.
The other solution is to move to a ranch, where there are no neighbors for miles.🤠
My solution is to have my devotional time (outside or in) very early in the morning. There’s no one mowing, sawing, or playing my least favorite genre of music at 5 am.
Super bonus points to you if you can guess my least favorite musical style.

And I like her solution, her little way through was to go in and eat pancakes with her husband! I love it! Spending time with loved ones and pancakes, life is good!

This post touched a subject that has been on my mind lately; patience is not my strong point…I will say it before someone else does. I love your take away line:

“Kind reader, it takes patience and persistence to walk God’s thin trail, but it’s the only one that leads to heaven.”

You reminded me of a recent description of the life of faith that occurred to me; the way of faith is a walk through the woods with God…only He knows both the way in and the way out!”

May our Father God continue to guide and bless both you and Nancy today 🙏 🇺🇸🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

I wasn’t familiar with her either, Pete, but I want to read her autobiography. As a Protestant, I’m not much into sainthood, but this thought from Therese is right up there with Augustine and Ignatius—two of my other favorites.

Love that quote from this Saint, whom I’m embarrassed to say, I never heard of. Sounds like a great opening line for a song!
