Under the World’s Influence

It’s a daydream. I’m speeding down the interstate, seething about someone who did me wrong, when I see the flashing lights of a police motorcycle behind me. I pull over, and up walks a larger-than-life person in dazzling white clothing. It’s not the police, but an angel from heaven, who tickets me for DUWI—Driving Under the World’s Influence.

It’s a probing question: Do I spend more time under the world’s guidance than God’s? After all, we become like those with whom we most associate.

The Bible talks about King Solomon being so wise, the whole world sought an audience with him, to hear the wisdom God put in his heart (1 Kings 10:24).

Am I seeking an audience with the world, or vice-versa?

My satellite television provider wants me to watch their programing on all my devices. “We live in a go anywhere, go anytime world,” they say.

Agreed. But when we arrive at our destination, will it be someplace worth going?

For the wisdom of this world is foolishness in God’s sight.

1 Corinthians 3:19a (NIV)

Thankfully, the Bible also talks about how anyone who lacks wisdom, should ask God for it, just like Solomon did, and the Lord delivers—with no belittling (James 1:5).

Kind reader, no matter how “smart” the world becomes, it will never be wiser than the God who created it.

I’m preaching to the choir now. 🎶😇🎶

Thank you for reading. Prayers and love. 🙏❤️

But the wisdom that comes from heaven is first of all pure; then peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and sincere.

James 3:17 (NIV)

You’re welcome, David! Amen! I love that verse too! Many blessings! David, I’m substitute teaching–only 1/2 days because of my cancer and the blood, etc…it’s worn me out, and I’ve thought of you! Lol. That’s why I’m not here very often. I’ll sub tomorrow, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday (and have my oncology appt and blood draw on Wednesday–my liver enzymes are very high and we want to monitor how I’m doing with getting back around kids for a bit). It’s been such a blessing. I pray for you daily (david daily’s dose of course!).

Thank you, Karla! Philippians 4:8 was one of the scriptures our pastor preached from this morning. It’s a perfect preventative for getting a DUWI from God.😇
I also love 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18: “Be joyful always; pray continually; give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.”
Thanks for stopping by. God Bless!

DUWI! Wow. This is powerful, David!! What a great way to think of our destinations–and the speedy journey. Today a friend and I encouraged each other by thinking about….whatever is true, noble, right, pure, lovely, and admirable–worthy of praise and excellence!! Philippians 4:8. My friend, I want to “drive” with an eternal perspective. So, people stop honking at me! Tee hee. God bless you, brother!

The verse you shared pairs well with this post. Thanks, Mitch! I’ve been in the choir, and preached to it for years. Best seats in the house.

Amen, David (said Choir member Mitch)! I couldn’t help but think of Romans 12:2, “Do not be conformed to this world, but (instead) be transformed (literally “metamorphosed”) by the renewing of your mind.” The verse I start my week with every Monday morning, a sort of, “Please, help me not to be that, Lord, but this!”

It was a daydream, Anneta. I read a devotional about being overly influenced by the world, and my imagination filled in the story. DUI became DUWI and the policing angel on the motorcycle popped into my mind. Thank you for stopping by. God Bless!

“So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.” 1 Corinthians 10:31 (NIV)

This scripture is so pertinent to the burden behind this post! Thank you for sharing, Nancy. God Bless!!

“When we arrive at our destination, will it be someplace worth going?” A thought-provoking question, David! We’re so easily side-tracked by money, pleasure, success (by the world’s standard), fame, etc. We need a prayer-saturated, over-arching goal that keeps us pursuing the glory of God (1 Corinthians 10:31). May we see the WORTH of such a destination, and plan our days accordingly.

Oh yes, we need to seek God’s wisdom and live by it. As we walk with the Lord Jesus, we will live in his wisdom.

Interesting. Was this a dream or a vision? Either way, great reflections for us to consider and keep in mind. 💗

I love it when God puts the same message on two or more hearts! It’s easier than ever to fall under the world’s influence, especially with mini-computers in our pockets. Blessings to you and Susan as well. 🙏🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🇺🇸

Thank you for stopping by today, Grandma. As you commented once before, “Just keep following Jesus, no matter the challenges.” That wisdom went into my journal!

You make a valid point here David which should have us asking ourselves: “how much of my life is surrendered to God?” My reading of your challenging message coincides with me just finishing writing notes on a similar tone for tomorrow…I get the message loud and clear, Amen . Our Father a great God indeed. Thank you brother. God bless you and Nancy today 🙏 🇺🇸 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

Oh David, I love several nuggets of wisdom here. ” Will it be worth going?” To the destination the world promises? And the wisdom of God is smarter than any device. Amen! Thanks my brother and have a good weekend.

True, brother Matt. Some of my most memorable and treasured times with the Lord, and fellow Christians happen offline. There’s no true replacement for an old-fashioned coffee shop. Thanks for stopping by. God Bless!

It would be quite the event if an angel pulled a person over. 🙂
Technology has brought more distractions and influences for sure. Fortunately, it has also brought more ways to to reflect on faith such as interacting with fellow bloggers, but still there is nothing quite like holding a bible marked up with side notes.

Thanks, Chris. Ungodly influences slip in through the cracks, at least for me. Being in the world but not of it is serious work. Thanks for reading and commenting. God Bless!

Great insight. In a go-go world, everyone seems to talk about being on the move. It’s an important question you ask: what’s the destination? A good reminder to pay attention to what we let influence us.
