I Can Stop at Any Time

It’s an old joke that lately came to mind.

A man keeps drinking brake fluid, and his family is concerned for his safety.

“Don’t worry,” he says. “I can ‘stop’ at any time.”

Headed home from church choir, on a moonless night, my wife saw a flash of fur in front of our SUV, and then “Boom!”  It was a lost coyote who found our front grill on the interstate.

“Should I stop?” asked my bride? “Nah,” I replied. “I’m sure it’s fine.”

It’s ten miles later and we’re almost home, when the bells and warning lights start: “Vehicle is too hot. Pull over in a safe location as soon as possible.”

Thankfully, we were one block from a Dollar General.

Parked by the front door, bathed in soft light coming from inside the store, I discover the problem. The wayward prairie wolf smashed dead center into the bottom of our radiator, and it’s dripping steadily.

I run inside and buy a big bottle of water, pour it into the overflow tank, and we carefully drive the remaining four blocks home.

As we turn into our neighborhood, God shows us another cautionary tale. A skunk crosses the road in front of us, with a clueless kitten in pursuit!

The prudent see danger and take refuge, but the simple keep going and pay the penalty

Psalm 22:3 (NIV)

Kind reader, I, and my little kitten friend, should be more careful. As it turns out, God was looking out for both of us.

I suppose the moral of the stories is it’s sometimes better to pause than to proceed.

You are my hiding place; You shall preserve me from trouble; You shall surround me with songs of deliverance.

Psalm 32:7 (NKJV)

Thank you for reading. 🙏❤️ prayers and love.

Great post, Dave. Couldn’t help but see a pun related to the cat chasing a skunk: “sometimes better to ‘paws’ than to proceed.”

We’re glad the damage wasn’t even more severe, and, as you said, we weren’t injured.

So true. We’ve hit small to medium sized animals before, out on the highway, with minimal damage. This time the coyote hit at just the right (or wrong) spot. Thankfully, it wasn’t a 🦌 deer!

Thanks, Grandma. Your comment reminds me how many times folks in the Bible saw a situation all wrong, when God truly had other plans.

Great advice – for our walk with God. We need to take time to pause and let His word and His presence really reach our hearts.

Thank you, Bridget. Hopefully the little kitty didn’t get sprayed. But it was a real eye-opener watching it chase after a 🦨 skunk!

Yes, difficult things may still happen to us, but we only need to look for God’s guidance—day or night—to lead us on.

As I read your post I was reminded of the pillar of God that went before the children of Israel leading the way. Our Father God has the road ahead of us covered, we only need to look. God bless you today brother 🙏

I was planning on getting in math mode, the power of force x velocity, but seeing $5000 of damage, thought it best to just say I’m sorry to hear about your loss.

Our RAV4 ended up with over $5000 worth of damage—all from hitting a coyote dead-center at 75 mph.
Thanks for stopping by. God Bless!
