It’s an old joke that lately came to mind.
A man keeps drinking brake fluid, and his family is concerned for his safety.
“Don’t worry,” he says. “I can ‘stop’ at any time.”
Headed home from church choir, on a moonless night, my wife saw a flash of fur in front of our SUV, and then “Boom!” It was a lost coyote who found our front grill on the interstate.
“Should I stop?” asked my bride? “Nah,” I replied. “I’m sure it’s fine.”
It’s ten miles later and we’re almost home, when the bells and warning lights start: “Vehicle is too hot. Pull over in a safe location as soon as possible.”
Thankfully, we were one block from a Dollar General.
Parked by the front door, bathed in soft light coming from inside the store, I discover the problem. The wayward prairie wolf smashed dead center into the bottom of our radiator, and it’s dripping steadily.
I run inside and buy a big bottle of water, pour it into the overflow tank, and we carefully drive the remaining four blocks home.
As we turn into our neighborhood, God shows us another cautionary tale. A skunk crosses the road in front of us, with a clueless kitten in pursuit!
The prudent see danger and take refuge, but the simple keep going and pay the penalty
Psalm 22:3 (NIV)
Kind reader, I, and my little kitten friend, should be more careful. As it turns out, God was looking out for both of us.
I suppose the moral of the stories is it’s sometimes better to pause than to proceed.
You are my hiding place; You shall preserve me from trouble; You shall surround me with songs of deliverance.
Psalm 32:7 (NKJV)
Thank you for reading. 🙏❤️ prayers and love.
