The Magic of Children’s Notes: A Lesson in Meaning

Three folded note cards with purple writing held together by matching painter’s tape. A young student, at morning drop-off, handed them to me when she got out of the car.

This happens often at elementary schools; children share their artistic creations with others. And it’s always an honor to be chosen for such a gift.

Once, God even used something like this to send me a message when I really needed it.

I carefully put the treasured dispatch into my pocket, planning to open and read it later. It ended up in the front zipper pocket of my lunch box, where it stayed for two whole days. Is this how important memoranda are lost to antiquity?

Thankfully, when I sat down to eat my lunch, I remembered it was there. Cautiously peeling back the purple tape, I opened the little one’s heartfelt note.

It’s a bunch of illegible scribbles, nine squares (with more squiggles inside them), and a single somewhat decodable word: β€œfamldok.” Finally, there’s an equally mysterious symbol, perhaps a coiled serpent, drawn in pencil.

What does it mean?!

If only I’d studied to become an Egyptologist.𓀼𓀫𓁁𓁀

But then it hit me: I don’t need to translate this cryptic memo, the young girl who wrote it attends my school! True, there are six-hundred children here under the age of six, but surely I can find her again and ask what it means.

And hope does not disappoint us, because God has poured out his love into our hearts by the Holy Spirit whom he has given us.

Romans 5:5 (NIV)

Kind reader, when it comes to making sense of life’s confusing messages, you and I are not without resources. We have a loving creator (God) who is able and willing to help us translate and interpret!

Thank for reading. πŸ™β€οΈ prayers and love.

It most certainly was, Priscilla! She acted like I was the only person in the universe who was supposed to receive her gifted message. I am honored! God’s messages are also precious. Thank you for reading and sharing. God Bless!

Thank you for reading and sharing your thoughts, brother Eric. Green Snoopy has the swine flu, huh? πŸ˜ƒ

Whenever I see a child’s heart felt artistic creativity, I think about how Jesus said only those of us with a trusting heartβ€”- like a childβ€”will enter the kingdom of heaven.
    Have a blessed Thanksgiving!

This is a sweet post, it reminds me of the hundred notes and cards that I’ve saved from my little nieces and nephews.
I particularly recall receiving a picture of Snoopy with the face colored green. When I asked my six year old niece why the face was green, the answer was priceless:

    β€œSnoopy has the swine flu.”

I love the heart of kids, and can see why Jesus loves them so much.
Thanks for sharing your love for them too, brother David.😊

Yes I do! The little girl didn’t hesitate, she got out of the car and handed it to me–straight away. Some things are too deep for words. Maybe this is one of them. Thanks for reading and commenting, Pastor Pete.

A great reminder to seek God for the answers that seem elusive and hard to understand. Thanks for your continued inspiring posts.

Whatever it says, you have a special friend! Maybe in our own fumbling attempts at loving others, only God Himself can read our hearts.

Agreed, brother Matt. Now, I just need to track her down for the translation.πŸ™‚πŸ™ƒπŸ˜ƒ
Your reference to the parables of Christ is perfect! He explained the meaning of some of these-with those closest to Him, and the Holy Spirit still does this today.

In her mind, she handed you a treasure that she understands the meaning of. God gave us His Word that he understands the meaning of. Jesus spoke in parables that he understood the meaning of.

This lovely post coincides with recent art gifts from our wee grandson earlier this week when we were visiting the family. I looked mystified at the colourful creation and just smiled at Logan, “Wow thank you, that is beautiful!” The beauty is in the care and love that created it and chose to share it with us – we treasure such things. Thank you for making me smile on this cold winter’s day David 😁

May our Father God continue to bless you and Nancy today πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡ΈπŸ΄σ §σ ’σ ³σ £σ ΄σ ΏπŸ™
