The Power of Love

The sobbing student had to be carried into my office, refusing to come in under their own power. This is a sure sign of a serious problem for a principal.

Normally, there are two types of criers: sad or mad. And this one seemed furious.

The five-year-old stood across from my desk with clenched fists. Tears were running down her face, and thicker stuff was coming out of her nose. I offered her a tissue, but she refused to take it.

“Yep, she’s mad,” I thought.

Priority one in this scenario is to make an emotional connection with the student. A child who’s extremely upset usually won’t respond to reason. They need to regulate before anything more can be done.

I came out from behind my desk and got down on the little one’s level. Kneeling at an angle from her, just out of arm’s reach, I offered her another tissue. She stepped toward me and took it.

This was a good sign.

With a calm, business-like tone, I asked her if she’d ever played with pink Play-Doh. She said no. “I have some. Would you like to try it out?” I said with a grin. Visibly softening, she said yes.

As she rolled out the Play-Doh and used a plastic cookie cutter to make snowmen, I asked her what happened. She told me she wanted to be line leader, but her teacher wouldn’t let her.

I knew the pint-sized pupil also slapped two classmates and shoved another one down, but we would get to that later. I wasn’t sending her back to class, anyway.  Not today. So, I let her play.

This looks like rewarding misbehavior, but it’s a great way to calm an upset kid down. Then you can talk sense with them. But the wee girl wasn’t quite ready.

Back at my desk I caught up on emails, while my young friend pressed out snowflakes, but now with bright blue Play-Doh.

“I love you.” she said–out of nowhere. “Thank you. “I love you, too.” I replied. (These are among the most precious and sincere words children say.)

Given how our time together started, I was curious, “Why do you love me?”

I love you because I see you.

I’m half a century older than a child who just schooled me on the truest meaning of love. It wasn’t my thinning salt-and-pepper hair, or my wrinkled bespectacled face that she noticed. It was something beyond the surface.

She. Saw. Me.

And we have known and believed the love that God has for us. God is love, and he who abides in love abides in God, and God in him.

1 John 4:16 (NKJV)

Kind reader, God sees you and He sees me. And He loves us both, just as we are. Because He is love

You’re right about that, Peggy. Love is the first and best place to start with everyone. As the Rev. Jesse Jackson said, “Nobody rises to low expectations.”

David, I loved this story! Love is where we always start with kids, they are more perceptive than many adults. When we start with love, it is usually returned. Thanks for sharing!

You are spot on about the fact that a young child’s limited vocabulary makes it more challenging to share their feelings. This is especially so when they are very upset.
Yes! Thankfully, the Holy Spirit is similarly patient with us!
🙏🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🇺🇸 Blessings from God to you and the bunch.

and nope, not rewarding bad behaviour. helping someone regulate is a good thing especially with those who have a lesser developed vocabulary

Thank you, Deb. I was a minister for 14 years, before becoming an educator, so sermons usually come easily. The little girl’s statement was an eye opening blessing! I am happy you stopped by today. God Bless you and Todd.

Thank you, Malcolm. The lessons from little ones often arrive unannounced and unexpected. Like this one, the are sometimes also lessons from God.

That’s a great story. Thanks, David. I never get over how much we can learn from children, and how we need to listen before we do anything.

Thank you, Karla!! True, love alone can’t stop bad things from happening. But it’s a great go-to healer for during and after! I’m more of an early childhood specialist, but a 5th grader ended up with me for a couple of hours yesterday afternoon. He was very upset too, but calmed down in due time. It’s all God’s work! I’m glad you still get to be a part of it, Karla!! You may serve part time, but it makes a full time difference in students lives. 🤗

I’m in tears, David!!!! Amen amen amen! God sees us. Everyone wants to be seen. Mic drop. Yes! I had a situation~ok, it was terrible (think 5th grade fights, name calling, shoving,…”fight fight” chants) . The power of love didn’t stop the fight~ but it helped soften a girl’s heart before I left for the day. I thought of you that afternoon and thanked God for leaders who ….love. God bless you, my friend. Thank you!❤️🙏🏻

Yes, I play along too—sometimes. In this particular case I showed the little girl how to roll out the Play-Doh before cutting out the shapes.

She certainly got my attention! I just followed my training (as a military person would say), and things were unfolding as expected. But then the little girl said one of the most profound things I’ve ever heard. 🤗 Thank you, brother Bruce. God Bless!

Your lesson is the one I took from this! Do I truly “see” others, in this distracting world? And, when I do, will they notice it? Thank you for sharing. My post today serves as a bookend for yours. 🤗 God Bless, and thank you for what you do. It is truly a ministry!

I’d forgotten Mr. Rogers said that. Yes, it fits perfectly!
What I did is standard practice for crisis intervention with children. I learned how to do this from watching wonderful mentors with much more experience than me.
I started out as a minister who transitioned into working with elementary aged children full time. My first calling is as a minister of the gospel, but God adjusted where and how I do this.
Thank you for stopping by! God Bless.

Wow, kids do have a wisdom we forget. What she said reminds me of Mister Rogers saying “It’s you I like”.

Sounds like you have a gift for working with children? Was it something you always felt called towards?
