God’s Love: A Comfort in Our Struggles

A small Bluetooth speaker sits on the back of the paper shredder in my school’s main office. One of our secretaries enjoys streaming country and western music through it, while she works nearby.

The other day, when I came to destroy some confidential documents, it struck me how shredding paper to the tune of a heart-rending country song is fitting. I quickly improvised my own lyrics and melody on the spot:

🎶 I lost my trailer and I’m livin’ in my truck. 🎶🤠

Everyone laughed—even the country music fans.

I mused about how done-somebody-wrong songs are always in style. It’s a picture of how our fallen world sometimes works: I trusted you, and you betrayed me.

Thank heaven, we don’t get the same treatment from God. He reached out to us (first) with a done-somebody-right song.

This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins.

1 John 4:10 (NIV)

Now, there’s a tune to be happy about!  God cares deeply for us and acts positively on our behalf, no matter what.

What, then, shall we say in response to this? If God is for us, who can be against us?

Romans 8:31 (NIV)

Kind reader, whatever we face, God’s affection is stronger still. Love and loss are like two bookends of life, but the Lord is a great librarian. He knows how to organize the shelves. Today, and every day may we trust in His eternal love.

Thank you for reading. 🙏❤️ prayers and love.

Woot woot! I’m in good company with you, David! I hope you and yours had a Merry Christmas, my friend. God bless you all! Here’s to a new year. Oh, B.J. Thomas–yes!
Let’s stop and pay a tribute to….”Wichita Lineman” shall we? Tee hee.

I’m familiar with that song, brother. Carrie Underwood is from Oklahoma. Her mother and sisters are all teachers.

I grew up in classic country too, Karla. At my parent’s home, one did not speak poorly of Merle Haggard or George Jones. B. J. Thomas was the best!

The word picture came to my mind out of nowhere, Pete. It seems accurate, though. Love and loss sound like strange bedfellows, but such is life. Merry Christmas, brother!

I love that quote, ” love and loss are like two bookends on life’s shelf,” Yes, thank God He knows how to organize them.”

Amen, David! I giggled too! I grew up on country music (old country~ the good stuff lol). I was singing, “Hey, won’t you play, another somebody-done-somebody wrong song….make you feel at home…while I’m with my baby…lol” but quickly, I went to Jesus loves me! Thank you, God, for your grace and love. Merry Christmas to you and your family! Enjoy your well-deserved break too, my friend 🙏🏻🎄

Agreed, Malcolm. Here in the U.S., the morning shows are light-hearted and happy about starting the day, but it doesn’t last. The evening news is mostly about what went wrong.

I’ve seen people dance the Bosa Nova, but didn’t realize the music was called that too.

I like the ‘somebody-done-right’ principle, David. If our news bulletins were only ‘somebody done right’, if people were on trial for ‘doing something right’etc.

I grew up listening to country music with my father, but am not particularly a fan. These days I like music without words—like classical and smooth jazz.

There is nothing more safe, secure and life-giving in this world than the love of Jesus. And what a difference that has made (and makes) to me. Thanks for this beautiful post, David.

Thank you for this encouraging post today David. You reminded me of the Carrie Underwood song “Jesus Take The Wheel” – a country song with a great message if a bit quirky. God bless you today brother 🙏

Brother, I love how you found an actual country classic that supports my main point!
I’ve pocket streamed before, too. And I’ve also had two different streams going at once, without realizing it. Think Vivaldi and the Red Hot Chili Peppers.
I hope you and Terri have a blessed Christmas, as well. I’ll be praying for you both, as this is the first one since Terri’s sister passed. Correct?
    Blessings.

The other day, as I was walking from point A to point B, I heard someone singing. I thought, “That sounds like Merle Haggard.” And then I remembered the phone in my pocket. Apparently I was pocket streaming Merle singing “My Favorite Memory.” I love how you weave everyday experiences into stories sharing Scripture that reminds us even though we walk the line we don’t walk the line alone. Thanks for sharing. Happy Sunday to you and Nancy!

Beautiful reminder, David! And I’ve never encountered a shredder that plays music 😂.

Hope you and your family have a wonderful Christmas! 🎄
