Sharing Matters: A Reflection on Gifts and Grace

Just before the recent holidays, one of our secretaries brought in a bagged Christmas gift and placed it on my desk. “Maybe your wife will enjoy this,” she offered.

I smiled and thanked her, promptly looking in the bag once she stepped out. It was indeed a girl gift: fuzzy socks, scented hand lotion, and sparkling lip balm. I sat it aside, to save for my Nancy.

Such is life. Some gifts we receive are meant to be shared with others.

The night Baby Jesus was born, the angel told the shepherds, “I bring you good tidings of great joy which will be to all people.” (Luke 2:10) The Bible says they hurried to Bethlehem to find Him, and once they did, they spread the word concerning what had been told them about this child.

In other words, they were an active part of the story; they went out of their way, both to find Jesus and then to tell everyone about his arrival. They shared the news of the greatest gift of all with others.

There’s a billboard off the interstate that I frequently drive past. It says, “Jesus is the answer to all your problems.”  Agreed.  But every time I read it, I say to the unseen advertiser, “You’re right, Jesus is the answer. Now, please include your contact information so we can talk about how this works in real life.

It’s easier to speak God’s truth than to live it. Someone spent thousands of dollars to share an important message, only to fall short on the application part. Are they simply an advertiser, or a satisfied customer?

The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things they had heard and seen, which were just as they had been told.

Luke 2:20 (NIV)

Kind reader, may we be advertisers and satisfied customers of Christ, just like the first folks who rejoiced at His birth.

Thank you for reading. 🙏❤️ prayers and love.

Thank you, Beth. I knew my two topics went together, but wasn’t sure how. I’ve playfully considered putting out a wish list of guy items for our 90% female staff. But I’m not going to do it.😊

That is a powerful statement David, “may we be advertisers and satisfied customers of Christ.” People are watching for both. Whether we are advertising well or not and whether we are satisfied or not. I pray I advertise well and reflect my utmost satisfaction. I did have to chuckle at the gift. I am often the recipient of the teacher gifts my husband receives this time of year from his students. This year I got some wonderful hand soap for our powder room. I really feel like I should be the one writing the thank you notes.

What a great point. Give people the contact information for Jesus. These days we might ask them to post the link!

Thank you, Bridget. I usually stick with one story, not two. I hope the gift shared at the beginning and the gift of Christ at the end worked together to make one good point. I appreciate your faithful reading and commenting here on my little blog. God Bless.

What an honor it is to advertise for the kingdom of God. Although I’m not sure I always get the execution right either. But I pray the Holy Spirit continues to guide our words and actions in this area. Thank you, David. Such a great and thought provoking post.

You didn’t want the fuzzy socks? : lol
The fact that Jesus chooses to work through me astounds me all the time but I pray he gives me strength and uses me to bless others.

That’s true. And Romans chapter one says God’s creation itself speaks both to His existence and sovereignty. As the Apostle Paul said, we are without excuse.
I just dislike seeing incomplete advertising.

Hello, brother Alan! I pray to be a good advert for Jesus as well. I want to avoid a “holier than thou “ attitude, or a “God is love—as long as you’re living right,” attitude.
The fuzzy socks alone made the gift a winner for Nancy.
Prayers for you and Susan, headed into the new year. 🙏🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🇺🇸

Thank you for sharing this thoughtful post David. I pray that I am a good advert for Jesus each day, and more so in 2025. I hope Nancy enjoyed her girly gift. May our Father God continue to guide and bless you both in the coming New Year. 🙏🇺🇸🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

It is easier to preach it than to walk it, for sure. I so appreciate the depth of your post, David. You really know how to hit home and get to the heart of the matter.

Thanks, David. That’s helpful. Becoming an enthusiastic advertiser because you’re a satisfied customer is important – and getting the two roles in balance is a lifetime lesson.
