Turning to God in Times of Crisis

A couple from our church has a two-year old son. One day last week, the little one came down with a awful cough and started running a fever. His mother gave him some over-the-counter medicine and put him down for a nap, then called the doctor’s office to make an appointment. When the kid awoke, he looked up at his mom and said, “Me sick. Me go to doctor.”

A child’s awareness is so absorbed in his mother that although he is not consciously thinking of her, when a problem arises, the abiding relationship is with the mother.

Oswald Chambers, My Utmost for his Highest

Where do big people naturally turn in a crisis?

When I am spiritually stymied, and maybe my fellowship with God is strained, do I wake up from a metaphorical nap saying, “David sick. David talk to God?”

Frankly, I’m more likely to keep struggling on my own–at least for the time being.

Come near to God and he will come near to you. Wash your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts you double-minded.

James 4:8 (NIV)

Kind reader, if there’s distance or a disconnect between us and God, we’d best go to Him–before He comes looking for us!

Return to me, and I will return to you, says the Lord of hosts.

Malachi 3:7a (ESV)

Thank you for reading. 🙏❤️prayers and love.

I remember that scene. The medic also got a double dose of morphine, with the Captain’s permission. It felt like everyone (including the medic) realized he wasn’t going to make it. No one wanted to watch the guy suffer. (But I digress.)

You’re right. The Lord is a jealous God. It’s not a good idea to put anything before Him in our lives.

Thanks for reading and commenting, brother Eric. God Bless!

I recall a scene from Saving Private Ryan when the medic was mortally wounded…as his comrades gathered round to save his life he began to fade out and his last words were “Mama, mama!”

I never forgot that. At our core we have a single relationship that is more foundational than all others. The older I get the more I realize that God doesn’t want to compete for first place in our heart, He wants to be our Daddy, our Lord, Savior, Champion, Healer and more.

He must increase, I must decrease.

Thanks for sharing. That disconnect tells us that we are the ones drifting away from our Lord

I’m with you, David. My Christian knowledge and theory doesn’t always match my Christian attitudes and actions.

Thank you, brother. Spending quality time with God often involves personal sacrifice. For me, this means getting up early every morning to have a special time with Him.

I love this. Yes, too often we take the row harder, row faster approach. It’s refreshing to sit in the presence of God and allow Him to treat us.

Thank you, brother Alan. I knew, when the child’s father shared what happened, that it was a window into child like trust. We big folk often make things too complicated. Our loving Heavenly Father loves to take care of His own!
May the Lord bless and keep you today, as well. 🙏🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🇺🇸
