Right Ideas but Wrong Timing: A Life Lesson

There was this guy I knew in college, I’ll call him Fred, who was a heavy sleeper. He could fall asleep, and stay asleep, almost anywhere. One Sunday evening, while his roommates played a raucous game of cards, Fred crawled up in his bunk bed and crashed. At some point during the night, the others decided to prank their snoozing friend.

Fred, wake up! You overslept, it’s almost time for your 8:30 English Lit. class,” said one of the lads, while the others shook the bed. As the story goes (I wasn’t there) Fred got up, dressed, combed his hair, and went downstairs. He walked outside–into the night–only to realize he’d been duped. It was two o’clock in the morning.

Right idea, wrong time.” It’s what a waiter at a local restaurant said to me the other day. We were talking about when a group of men comes for a monthly prayer breakfast. He thought it was Sunday, but I corrected him. It’s the second Saturday of every month.

Both the waiter and Fred had the right idea: serve some men at a breakfast, don’t be late to English Lit., but their timing was off.

There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under heaven.

Ecclesiastes 3:1 (NIV)

He (God) has made everything beautiful in its time.

Ecclesiastes 3:11 (NIV)

Kind reader, perhaps you and I know what God wants to do. We have the right idea; but what about the timing?

Some folks in the Bible waited quite a while before God’s promise to them proved true. Yet, their faith did not waver. Today, and every day, may it be the same with you and me.

Thank you for reading. 🙏❤️prayers and love.

Thank you, Karla. I like to think I’m prepared for God’s timing, but when my plans are disrupted, it’s sometimes hard to reset. However, of if I stay out of the Lord’s way, things quickly improve. Thanks for reading and commenting. God Bless!

I hear you, brother. Like Christ’s earliest disciples, we don’t always know when and where the test will come.
Thanks for stopping buy, brother Eric. God Bless!

Waiting is the hardest part for me…I want results and fulfillment on my time…but Gods recipe involves me waiting. On the other hand, sometimes God wants us to move now and we dig our heels in waiting for our timing.

I understand why Paul was often frustrated in his flesh. Great food for thought brother David!

Thank you, Dana. It’s easier to write about patience than practice it. I’m rediscovering this right now. I appreciate your reading and commenting. God Bless!

David, this is jampacked with wisdom and truth, my friend! Amen! God’s timing is perfect! Isn’t it amazing to reflect on life and see all the times that would’ve been disasters had God’s timing not worked out? Someone asked me if I was upset that it took 10 years for my diagnosis. “It was all God’s timing,” I replied. He needed me alone before I could depend on him for everything. Cancer included. To some folks, that might sound strange, but when you know and live with his perfect timing, surrendering your own futile schedule, the alignment with his will awakens your Spirit! And for the simpleton in me, I simply say, “Duh, Karla!” God bless you, my friend!! 🙏❤️

I’ll pray along with you, for a suitable apartment, that is affordable, and welcomes cats and coffee.

A pastor of mine used to say, “When God wants to grow an oak tree, He takes a hundred years.” His point to the twenty year old me was, don’t rush your development, because God has all the time in the world.

And this is why I remain prayerful and patient for an apartment to open.

In my present season, I am quickly reminded about “good idea, wrong time,” on a regular basis. I want to push forward only to be pulled back to reality. My recovery process has barely begun. I am on the journey where I am. For this stage of the race, it’s important to recognize I am near the beginning of the first lap not approaching the finish line of the last. Timing makes a difference.

It’s easy to become overwhelmed and not remember that God is always at work. Yet the stranded fisherman held on to faith, even in the most difficult situation. He had physical food and spiritual food and kept his wits about him. Praise God!
Thank you for being such a faithful reader and commenter, brother! I appreciate your friendship and encouragement in my Christian walk.

Amazingly I just read your timely post (pun intended) after reading the story of a young Christian fisherman who was stranded on a fishing raft at sea for 49 days. He survived by rationing and reading his Bible. Critics asked the question why it took God 49 days to rescue him, but the miracle is that He did in His time…not in man’s idea of time. This young man’s faith was rock solid in God through his trial. God is Good all the time brother! God bless you and Nancy today 🙏 🇺🇸 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿
