Safe Pasture in Strange Places

It happened early this past summer. A small herd of elk lumbered into town, grazing and then lying down in a grassy field across the street from a fitness center. It was quite a spectacle, all the more so as elk are naturally reclusive, even shy.

Picture four young bulls, with full racks of antlers, chewing contently, 200 feet from a major intersection! This is what singers at the church choir rehearsal saw when they looked out the windows.

Folks at a nearby stoplight did a double take, and some forgot to go when it turned green. The beep, beep of a car horn got them moving again, but the elk remained unfazed.

A local game warden explained a likely cause for this behavior. Two large alfalfa feeder fields near the edge of town were recently plowed under. This was a perfectly planned place for elk to eat their equivalent of dessert. But now the “ice cream parlor” is closed, and a small group of them went looking for greener pastures. As it turns out, the well-watered grass near the gym is tastier than the native turf out on the prairie.

Regional wildlife experts agree, the elk will likely return to their feeder fields when conditions improve. In the meantime, they’ve asked the public to enjoy the visitation and not disturb our new neighbors.

But he (God) raises up the needy out of affliction and makes their families like flocks.

Psalm 107:41 ESV

My friend Matt, who blogs at Jesusluvsall, is a teacher and home missionary here in the U.S. In the recent past, his city has been a gathering spot for refugees from war torn countries. Folks from places like the Ukraine came to America seeking temporary asylum, and now Matt teaches them English and shares with them about Jesus.

Like the elk, their “fields” have been plowed under, and they simply seek safe pasture, until conditions improve. Most of them want to go back home, when the time is right.

A group of Ukrainian Christians even started a church in Matt’s city, and it’s thriving! Kind reader, will you join me in prayer and support for our Ukrainian brothers and sisters in Christ, and for Brother Matt who faithfully ministers among them?

Thank you for reading. 🙏❤️ Prayers and love.

I took these photos of the elk this past summer, but it only dawned on me the other day how their story matches that of the Ukrainian refugees.

“Like the elk, their “fields” have been plowed under, and they simply seek safe pasture, until conditions improve.” Such a powerful line, David. Thanks for the reminder to pray for those who minister to them.

I’d seem before in the feeder fields, but this close? Never! Agreed, flowers sometimes bloom in the most unlikely places. The new Ukrainian church is a powerful example. Thanks for stopping by, Pastor Pete!

Wow about the elk. I’ve only seen one in a nature center. And praise the Lord about the new church. Jesus does amazing things in the most unlikely places.

I kept my distance too! I took these pictures from the safety of our church choir rehearsal room. In reading about elk coming into town, I learned that Estes Park, CO often has elk guests within the city limits. Thanks for stopping by, Sister Super C! God Bless.

I love this! This summer I saw 3 bull elk grazing on the lawn of the courthouse. It was beautiful, but I kept my distance.

It was indeed, Matthew. I have some other pictures I took of a large bull elk with a few cows munching beside him. It’s been quite a novelty having these bashful beasts around.

What a beautiful and vivid way to remind us that sometimes greener pastures show up in unexpected places, David, be it elk finding lush grass by a busy road or refugees finding spiritual and physical nourishment in a new community. Your story gently points us to the ways God provides what we need, even when the surroundings seem unfamiliar or out of place. It encourages me to pray for those seeking safety and well-being, and to trust that God leads His flock to the pasture that sustains them. Thank you for this encouragement and for spotlighting Brother Matt’s ministry among the Ukrainian believers! Blessings to you and Nancy today. It’s chilly down here in Big D.

Wow David thank you for the kind comments about me, my refugee friends, and my ministry. We have a Wildlife Safari 30 minutes north of my city. We stay in the car and drive slowly through elk for the first leg,

Excellent post and illustration of the elk, David! Often people are just like elk in looking for good grazing, particularly spiritual feeding.

May the blessings of the Lord be with our Ukrainian brethren in their walk with Him🙏

God bless you and Nancy today dear brother 🙏 🇺🇸🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿
