One of the joys of being an educational administrator in an elementary school is eating lunch with the students. Whenever my schedule allows, I sit at a back table in the cafeteria with a small group of kids and visit with them as we eat.
One day last week when lunch was over, a student asked if he could show me his art project. “It’s a cardboard boat!” he said with a grin. “Sure!” I replied. “I’d love to see your boat.”
I followed the student down to his classroom and helped him retrieve his project from a high shelf. (The teacher puts them out of reach, so children only work on them when they’re supposed to.)
It was a carefully created cardboard boat, made from a breakfast serving container, and glued down right in the center of it was a miniature Jesus!
“Who is that guy?” I asked.
“It’s Jesus, he’s making the storm stop.”
Faith filled Second Grader
“Did you learn about this in Sunday School?” I asked. “No,” the boy answered proudly. “I saw it on YouTube.”
It was a “God Wink” moment, as I took in how an eight-year-old found Jesus online.
Jesus replied, “You of little faith, why are you so afraid?” Then he got up and rebuked the winds and the waves, and it was completely calm. The men were amazed and asked, “What kind of man is this? Even the winds and the waves obey him!” Matthew 8:26-27 (NIV)
Kind reader, if a young boy, who apparently doesn’t go to church, can find Jesus on YouTube, what does that say for the rest of us?
It’s easy to let ‘adult’ problems feel too big for a simple solution. Our “storm boats” are more complicated than a child’s cardboard creation. But, truly, are they? Today, and every day, may we recognize with the faith of a child: “It’s Jesus, he’s making the storm stop.”
Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see. Hebrews 11:1 (NIV
Thank you for reading. 🙏❤️ prayers and love.
