The Power of Perspective

I love greeting students at my elementary school when they get dropped off in the morning. We exchange positive affirmations like, “Have an amazing day!” or my favorite, “It’s a great day at Freedom Elementary!”

Earlier this week, I gave my “It’s a great day…” pitch to a fourth grader, who stopped in his tracks. Looking at me thoughtfully, he said, “It should be.”–emphasizing the word should.

The young man has a point. As an administrator, it’s my job to make sure every school day is the best possible for our students. It simply should be! It’s a great day at Freedom elementary because every adult and every student makes it so.

Of course, such idealistic thinking doesn’t always hold up through breakfast. There are almost 1300 little humans at my school, with 150 adults to teach and care for them. Something or someone goes off the rails on a regular basis.

Our continuous commitment to what should be keeps us headed in the right direction.

But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.”

2 Corinthians 12:9 (NIV)

Notice, God didn’t tell the Apostle Paul His grace would be enough, He said it was.

Kind reader, like me have you ever asked the Lord to do something He’s already done? His grace is sufficient for us. Mark it down. End of story.

It should be.

Thank you for reading. 🙏❤️ prayers and love.

Sorry to be slow to comment, K.L. My life has been consumed by my new role, as of late. Thanks a million for your prayers! You’re spot on about reframing; even a little adjustment (in words or attitude) can make a big difference. My working theory: most people want to have positive interactions with others. I try to make it easier—by being one of the nicest and friendliest and helpful people they’ve ever met.

Thank you, Beth. I aspire to be valuable to the 14 teachers and 358 students entrusted to my care. I don’t feel golden (yet) but I hope to be. The daily wisdom is much needed. At times it feels like admin is happening to me—rather then the other way around.
Thank you for your kind words. God Bless!

To a teacher a good administrator is worth his weight in gold. I know you must be a blessing to the teachers you support and kids you serve. May the Lord give you the wisdom of Solomon with each new day.

Thank you, David, for this reminder that HIS grace IS enough! And it SHOULD be, right? When I was a principal, much like you, I’d tell the kids, “Let’s make it a great day!” There were so many ways I brought my faith into action around the kids. And even more so, how they taught me about keeping my faith as a child. Perspectives teach me. Sometimes a tiny “shift”; a word or phrase, can help me reframe. But as you stated, so wise and true, his grace IS and SHOULD be enough! I’ve been praying for your school year (I met with former teachers and dear friends to have prayer recently). God bless you, David! Thank you for your service! 🙏

Thank you, Beth! I’ve always done this with students. If you saw me walking up and down the halls you’d think I was running for political office. I’ve always believed students must know I care about them before they will care about what I know.
Administration is certainly different, but I’ve enjoyed my first full week of school. There’s never a dull moment, and absolutely no guarantee when you eat lunch.

David, What a gift you have given the students at your school as so many don’t start their day with the gift of a smile and kind words. I’m sure the 4th grader had no idea the gift he was giving you in return. Perspective is very important and plays such a powerful role in how events in our life unfold. How do you like being on the administrative side of education?

    Spot on

Just like driving on a perfectly straight road…if you take your eyes off it you will steer one way or another due to seemingly invisible factors

So we keep our eyes open to maintain our direction of travel

When I learned to ride a motorbike they told us to look down the road to where we wanted to go

The temptation is to look just in front of your front wheel

    They were right.

    It was

But looking up the road enables you to steer and be better prepared for everything coming

But looking right in front of us is SO tempting!

    Thanks David

Majik – please for my family, especially me. My 27 year hell on earth marriage is rearing its ugly head and I know that our maybe imaginary friend tells me His Grace is sufficient for me. He does gives me His Peace that passes understanding. I hear stories of people of the type you have to be around or work with in your line of occupation and know I don’t have nearly the crap some people have to live with. So I stay. But, somedays its just alot to live with, like today. And though I try to be gracious and not air all the dirty laundry, today is one of those days I just want to scream and let people know how horrible it is, in great detail. But, I don’t. Jesus knows and has heard the very words my spouse has said. And he is fixing it all, I do know that. Again, please pray for me.

I love your perspective, Majik. Our prayers don’t change God (at least most of the time) but they do change us. Thanks for sharing your C.S. Lewis story. Job, in the Bible, probably would have said the same thing. Actually, I think he did! Blessings, brother.

David, I guess I’m most like that fourth grader than I am like you or your readers. I know that God’s Grace IS sufficient for me, but an outside observer of me probably wouldn’t think that I know that or, maybe, that I believe it. My prayers are a mess, like my so-called Christian faith is a mess. I’m a mess, but I’m still here . . . and so is my messy faith in Christ Jesus. I’ve always loved the scene in the movie “Shadowlands” where the great actor Anthony Hopkins plays the role of C.S. Lewis, and his Oxford friends are asking him about his wife Joy’s cancer treatment. He tells them that there’s been some good news and one friend comments that NOW God has answered Lewis’ prayers and that he knows how hard Lewis has been praying. Lewis tells his friend that’s not why he prays. He prays because he can’t help himself. He prays because he’s helpless, waking or sleeping his prayers keep coming. He then adds, “My prayers don’t change God . . . they change me.” https://youtu.be/7GTX4xapmRM?si=ELIkSjfKreo3tRE7

Your post and closing question reminded me of where I have to often check myself in how I pray. Sometimes I find myself praying for something that I had already brought to Him, and I have to stop and apologise. My apology then turns to thanksgiving for what He has and will do. It is a matter of putting faith into practice…even in prayers.
Thank you for your timely reminder David! God bless you and yours this weekend brother 🙏
