Life Lessons, from a Box of Chocolates

Every month, after my wife and I sang at Twin Oaks Assisted Living, our friend Kathleen insisted that we follow her back to her room. Once inside, there was always something special she wanted to show us. First there was her bridal veil, from when she married her husband, Denzel, in 1947, also some dried flowers she pressed into a bookmark, and a wooden duck-call that Denzel custom carved. “D-boy was a quacker, alright,” she said with a wink.

But on this sunny February morning, it was something much newer she wanted to share—a small heart-shaped box of chocolates. “My husband gave me one of these every Valentine’s Day for sixty-three years,” she whispered.  “It’s been eight Februarys since he passed, and I buy one for myself–just to keep the streak going.” She gave us another wink, this time with a wry smile.“Would you like one?” she offered.

Standing there, chomping on a piece of chocolate, filled with strawberry cream, I asked “How do you keep going, Kathleen? What’s your secret?

Kind reader, it’s been a few years, but I still remember what she said: “Life itself can’t bring you joy unless you really will it. Life just gives you time and space. It’s up to you to fill it.”

Gladness and joy will overtake them, and sorrow and sighing will flee away.

Isaiah 35:10b (NIV)

Then he said to them, “Go your way, eat the fat, drink the sweet, and send portions to those for whom nothing is prepared; for this day is holy to our Lord. Do not sorrow, for the joy of the Lord is your strength.”

Nehemiah 8:10 (NKJV)

Thank you for reading. 🙏❤️ prayers and love.

I’ve been a very happy spectator, cheering on and for those down on the field/court, in the ring, riding the bull, on the greens, etc. for the first 53 years of my life. A year ago, I got the transformation of my life and I am now giving my seat up in the bleachers and moving to the playing areas. Not necessarily as the star quarter back/point guard/biggest belt holder/shiniest belt buckle holder/Ryder cup holder, etc., but maybe the costumed mascot, though I’m not above (or below) making some touchdowns/dunks/TKOs/8 second rides/Holes In One, etc. myself.

Kathleen’s wisdom also makes a great mantra for trauma recovery. We can’t always choose what happens to us, but, ultimately, we decide how we will respond. Thank you for stopping by. God Bless!

I love her attitude. What an inspiration! And her words are so profound and true: “Life itself can’t bring you joy unless you really will it. Life just gives you time and space. It’s up to you to fill it.” I’m going to take those words into my weekend.

I suspect that Kathleen, who was a child during the Great Depression of the 1930’s, learned to practice such bittersweet joy during that time. My grandparents were the same way. Thanks for reading and commenting. God Bless.

Thank you for sharing some of Kathleen’s life and wisdom with us.

The fact she kept buying chocolate hearts for herself after her husband passed, is a testament to her living that wisdom she shared. I can imagine it’d be so easy for that tradition/memory to become a sore spot on each Valentine’s for her. Yet it sounds like she still found joy in reflecting on and continuing that tradition, and also sharing the sweets of it with others. 💜

Exactly, brother Matt! These reverse blessings are often present, with all types of ministry. Slowing down, indeed. It was early in the smart phone days, but I don’t recall ever looking at mine while visiting with. Kathleen.

Kathleen passed away about 10 years ago at the age of 101. She truly was a wonderful person. She and her husband had no children of their own, but she touched so many lives as a high school English teacher, and then as a encourager and dispenser of wisdom to all.

Thank you, Bridget. Kathleen lived to be 101 years old. A local TV station interviewed her on her 100th birthday, and she shared the quote with them, too. She was such a wonderful person—a retired teacher.

Such a great reminder. I’m so thankful that we have the Lord. His love brings joy to our lives. But as Kathleen said, it’s up to us to make that choice. And David, I love that you and your wife sang at the assisted living facility. What a gift for all. Thank you for this inspiring post. I hope you have a blessed weekend!
