Rogue Waves

For centuries, they were merely examples of maritime myth—like Giant Squids and mermaids. Freakishly large waves forming at random on the open ocean? Respected scientists, back in the day, said “Nah, it’s not possible.”

Yet modern science proved otherwise. We now know that individual waves over 60 feet tall, and some as high as 100 feet, occasionally occur on all the world’s oceans.

Such rogue waves also randomly visit our lives—metaphorically, of course. Like ships on the ocean, we cruise along, successfully managing small to medium sized swells. “Hey, everyone deals with rough water now and then,” we assure ourselves. And then comes the proverbial hundred-footer—seemly out of nowhere—slamming into our lives.

In my current job, rogue waves are a given. I weathered two this past week. Ever the quote lover, I find unexpected solace in the words of a famous Greek shipping tycoon:

We must free ourselves of the hope that the sea will ever rest. We must learn to sail in high winds.

Aristotle Onassis

Fair enough, Mr. Onassis. Could you also recommend a good foul weather sailing instructor?

Never mind, I know a guy…

Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you.

Jesus–John 14:27a (NIV)

Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.

Jesus-Matthew 11:28 (NIV)

Word to the wise: when something large and unexpected hits, it’s often healthier to pause than to push through.

The presence and peace of Christ are always a safe harbor.

Thank you for reading. 🙏❤️ Prayers and love.

Only one rogue wave 🌊 hit me this week; that’s better than two 🌊🌊 last week. I appreciate your encouragement, brother Eric. Thank you, and God Bless.
“Rogue Waves” does sound like a good title for a spy thriller.

I agree. Rather than rushing to a response, trusting the Lord provides us better solutions than we would have come up with ourselves. Pause. Rest in His presence. Good stuff, David.

Thank you, Beth. In my reading about rogue waves, I learned that the single-hulled wooden ships of sailing days likely did not survive them. Thus, there were few eye witness accounts. Double-hulled metal ships fare much better. This information goes well with your analysis about facing the storms of life without Christ. Thank you for reading and commenting. God Bless!

I had to think of a rogue wave hitting the disciples boat with Jesus sleeping soundly below deck. Not sure how one could successfully weather a rogue wave without Jesus. Then again, I think the answer to that questions is one doesn’t. Great post David!

Thank you, Matthew. One of the largest rogue waves, verified by scientific instruments, and human witnesses, was off the coast of Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿. As I recall, it was back in 2000, when a 95 footer came near a research vessel while passing through the Rockall Trough, west of Scotland.

If they can inspire someone, it’s worth it ☺️

If it can inspire you, I’ll consider that the gravy on top (odd northern English phrase, I’ll grant you, but it says what I want to: the icing on the cake might be another phrase 😉)

So very true David. Being in the middle of a big wave (our family) here and now, one’s awareness of anything else is hard. There is a peace bigger than the wave and that
