For centuries, they were merely examples of maritime myth—like Giant Squids and mermaids. Freakishly large waves forming at random on the open ocean? Respected scientists, back in the day, said “Nah, it’s not possible.”
Yet modern science proved otherwise. We now know that individual waves over 60 feet tall, and some as high as 100 feet, occasionally occur on all the world’s oceans.
Such rogue waves also randomly visit our lives—metaphorically, of course. Like ships on the ocean, we cruise along, successfully managing small to medium sized swells. “Hey, everyone deals with rough water now and then,” we assure ourselves. And then comes the proverbial hundred-footer—seemly out of nowhere—slamming into our lives.
In my current job, rogue waves are a given. I weathered two this past week. Ever the quote lover, I find unexpected solace in the words of a famous Greek shipping tycoon:
We must free ourselves of the hope that the sea will ever rest. We must learn to sail in high winds.
Aristotle Onassis
Fair enough, Mr. Onassis. Could you also recommend a good foul weather sailing instructor?
Never mind, I know a guy…
Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you.
Jesus–John 14:27a (NIV)
Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.
Jesus-Matthew 11:28 (NIV)
Word to the wise: when something large and unexpected hits, it’s often healthier to pause than to push through.
The presence and peace of Christ are always a safe harbor.
Thank you for reading. 🙏❤️ Prayers and love.
