More “Care”Bell!

I recently came across this nugget of wisdom for educators: โ€œOne key ingredient of student success is the belief that their teacher likes them.โ€

Notice, it says the kid believes I like them, it doesnโ€™t mean I necessarily do.๐Ÿฅธ But in a great teacherโ€™s classroom, you canโ€™t tell the difference. Every student feels valued and welcomed every dayโ€”no matter what their teacherโ€™s true feelings. And, believe me, even the finest educators have moments when their interpersonal โ€œlike-o-meterโ€ is critically low.

As often happens, inspirational thoughts come in pairs. The Advice Trap, by Michael Bungay Stanier, is a book about becoming a better leader by being humble and staying curious when people come to you with their concerns. The idea is to be more coach-like in oneโ€™s behavior, by coming alongside the other person and helping them solve their own problems.

Anyway, about becoming more coach-like, MBS says,

Turn it up to 11, with more cowbell!

Michael Bungay Stainer

*So, then I put two and two together; why not really like everyone–ok, almost everyone๐Ÿ˜ฌโ€”by showing them I care–just a little bit more?

Turn it up to 11, with more โ€œcareโ€bell!

Regular Me (David)

I found a suitable made in the U.S.A. cowbell which I modified slightly. ๐Ÿค

Kind reader, good things could happen if you and I show others we careโ€”just a little more. On the other hand, itโ€™s difficult to find the up side of caring for others a bit less. Frankly, I donโ€™t want to be the one care-less person someone never forgets.

Hereโ€™s a favorite โ€œMore carebell!โ€ scripture.โ€ Please share one of yours in the comments.

My dear brothers, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry.

James 1:19 (NIV)

Thank you for reading. ๐Ÿ™โค๏ธ prayers and love.

*Maybe you already care for others, and show it too, as much as possible. If so, the “More carebell!” cheer is not intended as an insult. My aim is to encourage, not judge. ๐Ÿค—

Thank you, Peggy! As a brand new music teacher, my first school served many children who were at risk. Love was the one thing that most of them responded to favorably. Once they knew I really cared about them, it made all the difference.

Great post, David, full of wisdom and truth! I learned this early in my teaching career. My first class was labeled as โ€œbehaviorally and emotionally handicapped.โ€ It is amazing what love and caring can accomplish in the lives of those around us. Love the โ€œcareโ€bell!

This is such a wonderful scripture passage about how faith and deeds work together. Iโ€™m paraphrasing Shakespeare here, but he said something like, โ€œThey do not love who do not show their love.โ€

Wonderful post, David. Caring more sounds like the way to go. ๐Ÿ˜Š

“What good is it, my brothers and sisters, if someone claims to have faith but has no deeds? Can such faith save them?

Suppose a brother or a sister is without clothes and daily food.

If one of you says to them, โ€œGo in peace; keep warm and well fed,โ€ but does nothing about their physical needs, what good is it?

In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead.”

    James 2:14-17

Thank you, SimplyB! The Rev. Jesse Jackson said, โ€œNobody rises to low expectations.โ€ Heโ€™s right! Thanks for reading and commenting. I saw you posted today. I will go take a look. God Bless!

Great post! Your honest teacher perspective is insightful. I could have used a few more teachers who at least gave the impression they loved all their students. And you really can’t go wrong with practicing what someone mentioned earlier “Love God. Love people”. The entire Bible teaches that truth. I’ve been out of the blog habit for a bit. Always good to catch up with your encouraging words.

โ€œLove God, Love People.โ€ Thatโ€™s short enough for a bumper sticker, Bridget! I love it. I plan to secretly bring my carebell to our large staff meetings, and certain conference room sit-downs that can turn testy. When things start to sound uncaring, Iโ€™m gonna jump up, ring the bell, and say โ€œMore Carebell!โ€ Thank you for sharing, sister.

Itโ€™s not a Bible verse, but as I read your post, this came to mind – โ€œLove God, Love People.โ€ I like the care bell! And thank you for this post. A great reminder to spread Jesusโ€™ love to those we encounter!

I love how you connected the dots between Godโ€™s kindnessโ€”leading us to repentanceโ€”and how kindness is a fruit of the Holy Spirit. Hereโ€™s a phrase I recently coined: โ€œBe humble. Be kind. It could save your behind. โ€œ Iโ€™m sure someone else said it first, but I like it, brother Matt thank you for stopping by today. I hope you have a wonderful weekend. God bless.

I love your adage, Betty. Bible verses work, but so do quotes based on life experiences. The truth is folks donโ€™t have emotional gas gauges stuck on their foreheads. Others donโ€™t know, and sometimes the person themselves isnโ€™t aware just how close they are to empty. I hope you and Dan have a great weekend!

First off- I noticed when I read your post it was 3 hours ago so that meant you posted at 6:30am. I applaud you because I am never fully cognizant even if I am awake at 6:30am. ๐Ÿ™‚

It is God’s kindness that leads us to repentance. Kindness is a fruit of the Spirit. What an impact we can make by showing kindness

While it’s not Scripture, your post reminds me of the quote, “Nobody needs a smile so much as the one who has none to give.” But, at times, it is quite difficult. Thanks for your post, David!

This is such an important insight. Feeling someone likes us is extremely powerful. It absolutely brings the best out in us. I think this is a wonderful trait for a teacher to have. What a blessing to be a child in your care!!!

Good post David – caring is important at all times. Our motivation should be to never forget how much we have been cared for by others and of course by Father God through His Son. I have a particular love for the “one another” verses of Scripture of which I choose this one:

Be of the same mind toward one another; do not be haughty in mind, but associate with the lowly. Do not be wise in your own estimation.
    โ€” Romans 12:16
