Sweet Counsel to the Soul

Oil and perfume make the heart glad, so a man’s counsel is sweet to his friend.

Proverbs 27:9 NASB

The email came, just before the first weekend of October. Rainer Bantau, a fellow Christian blogger, was coming to Oklahoma City for a conference. Would I like to get together for coffee?

The Devotional Guy wants to meet me—in person?! “I said to my wife, only half believing. After all, Rainer has been blogging twice as long and also has twice as many followers.

What if it wasn’t really him, but an AI powered imposter?  I sent back a tepid reply and waited.

Friday came and Rainer posted, with pictures from inside the church–where he said he’d be. It was legit! I emailed back the next morning and agreed to meet him for lunch.

Just after the 11:30 AM break, my wife and I lingered in the church parking lot, when out of a side door walks Rainer, looking just like the pictures from his blog. 🤳

We walked to a local food court for lunch, where a heartfelt time of fellowship ensued.

Rainer told Nancy and me the biggest reason he’s drawn to express himself through art and writing: leading a major ministry to the homeless, every day he sees the needs of people meet the transforming grace of God.

Yet, this juxtaposition is both blessing and burden, as there’s only so much of Rainer (and his co-workers) to go around.

Man, can I relate!

As an educational administrator, it often seems like everyone wants a piece of me. And sometimes there’s nothing left to give.

But in Rainer’s tired, but determined eyes, I saw that the grace of God is enough.

Always. ✝️

And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work.

2 Corinthians 9:8 (NIV)

Thank you, Devotional Guy, my brother in Christ. And thank you, kind reader, for dropping by my little blog today.

🙏❤️ prayers and love.

Yes it was both a blessing and a joy to meet Rainer in person. He is just as gracious and kind as he seems on his blog.

My daughter and I have an addiction to Empire Slice House (pizza). It’s hard to branch out sometimes, but it looks like we might need to.

Yes, it was. The midtown area of OKC is flourishing. We ate lunch at a “foodie haven,” as Rainer called it, named The Collective. There were nine different restaurants under one roof!

I may very well try your idea—with my hands on my hips! I thought about simply hiding, but your way has real potential!!

It was the first (for me) of its kind. I hope to one day meet many of my blogging friends in person: folks like you, Matt, and Alan–all the way over in Scotland.

I love this. So happy to hear you got together. What a blessing! The comment about an AI powered imposter made me laugh! Thank you for the much needed reminder that there are things in life we can’t do in our own strength, but by the grace of God. ✝️

That is SO very cool! And I agree, some days it feels like everyone wants a piece of me, so I plant my feet firmly and shout out, “You wanna piece of me? Come get it!” in my best defiant tone. Not really, but it sounds good!

Thank you, brother! It was rewarding to meet Rainer in person, and to talk about how blogging, leadership, and the Lord intersect.
It’s so true, the Holy Spirit is always on duty!

I am excited for you and Rainer, us bloggers for the LORD don’t get many chances to meet in person.😊 I am certainly excited to see what the Spirit will have you guys collaborating on. Yes there are are only a wee bit of Dave and Rainer, and 24 hours in the day…but there are endless options and resources available to Almighty God, your Father in Heaven. In and through Him we can achieve great things to glorify Him, and share the Good News of Salvation. May you both “abound in every good work” as Father God guides you each day 🙏
