Finding Meaning in an Open Closet Door

It started simply enough. Shortly after we remodeled our home, I found a closet door open in the back hallway. “I must have forgotten to close it after I was in there last night,” I convinced myself. But it kept happening. “Sweetheart, were you in the back hallway closet yesterday? I noticed it was left open” My bride of twenty-plus years blithely replied, “No.”

Okay, this was becoming a mystery. There are only two people at my house. And if I wasn’t leaving a closet door open, and my wife wasn’t leaving it open either, then who was? Maybe I needed to start searching for the hidden camera.

Then, one day, while I was sitting across from the hallway closet, typing like I am right now, out of the corner of my eye I saw the door open–all by itself. Frankly, it creeped me out. But I don’t believe in ghosts, so I chalked it up to a faulty strike plate or a weak latch.

We’ve rearranged items in the closet–in case something was pushing against the door–and checked the mechanics of the knob, but it still opens by itself. Eventually, we came to terms with the fact that we have a quirky closet entry point. It took even longer before we realized it was also a sign from God.

I know your deeds. See, I have placed before you an open door that no one can shut. I know that you have little strength, yet you have kept my word and have not denied my name.

Revelation 3:8 (NIV)

Then Jesus said to them again, “Most assuredly I say to you, I am the door of the sheep.”

John 10:7 (NKJV)

Kind reader, nothing and nobody can take God’s favor from someone who is safely holding the nail-scarred hand of Christ!  He is an open door that no one can shut. Hallelujah!

He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all–how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things?

Romans 8:32 (NIV)

Thank you for reading. πŸ™β€οΈ prayers and love.

Thanks, brother! The rains of last week are long gone, and it’s nothing but sunshine up here in the Sooner State.
I think I’ve decided not to fix the ever opening closet door. After I shut it and find it open again, a few hours later, it reminds me that no person or circumstance can shut a door that God opens!

What a beautiful and beautiful post, David. The mysteries of home ownership are unending. β€œβ€¦nobody can take God’s favor from someone who is safely holding the nail-scarred hand of Christ!” Amen and hallelujah to that statement, brother! Thankfully, our salvation is cemented by the faithfulness of Christ and the steadfast security of the Holy Spirit. I hope your house ain’t leaning eitherβ€”but if it is, maybe you can sell tickets like they do to the Leaning Tower of Pisa? Hope y’all all have a wonderful weekend. The weather down here in God’s country is magnificent.

That would have to be a “big” mouse to reach up and turn the knob! Now that would really freak me out!

Thanks for sharing, Bridget. Like you, I am a reader. So, the Phillip Keller book info is not more information than I wanted to know. πŸ€—

I’d never heard of this title by him, so it makes sense that it’s a part of a special series.

Such a hoot about that door. I would’ve been freaked out for sure. And then maybe I would’ve looked to see if a mouse was living in the closet. lol. But I love the reminder that Jesus is our open door. So thankful for our Good Shepherd.. I am reading another book by Phillip Keller called A Shepherd Looks at the Good Shepherd, and it reflects on 3 parables in John 10. I haven’t gotten to verse 7 yet, but now I am especially intrigued. (And by the way, I don’t think this book can be bought by itself. It’s part of the Shepherd Trilogy.) Anyway, probably more intro than you wanted to know. πŸ˜… Have a great rest of your weekend.

    Here’s one straight from scripture:
πŸ™β€Your strength will equal your days.” AMEN!
I believe God said this to one of the patriarchs, but it’s my prayer for you, sister.

I love our blogging community too, David. I’ve missed it! And I’ve missed being in school this past week (I began a new chemo, my friend!). I sure wish I could work at YOUR school! I know how you bring peace, love, and joy to all! Praise God! Blessings to you and yours!!

Karla, you and Matt both brought up angles I hadn’t thought of. That’s one reason I love our blogging community! Thank you for stopping by. Yes, I’m leaving the door open, and finishing out the school year with peace, love, and joy! Blessings.

HE is our open door! AMEN! I was thinking of Revelation 3:20 too And also, “But when you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.” (Matt 6:6). Apparently, David, God needs you to leave your door cracked open a bit. Tee hee! I know he loves our humor and I pray that MANY will knock at his door!

Like brother Matt, I would’ve loved landing in Narnia, too! Many blessings, my friend. I’m praying for you as you wind down this year with busy times!

I never thought about trying to step into the closetβ€”to check for a portal to Narnia! Oh well, it’s not a wardrobe closet, anyway. I’d just bang my head on a shelf. πŸ€•

It’s interesting that this closet door didn’t open itself until we replaced the knob and hardwareβ€”during the remodel. I hope our house isn’t leaning. I don’t think it is. πŸ€”

I love your Mediterranean shepherd reference. Sheep πŸ‘ rustlers can get through gates faster than through a person who is the gate! There’s a post in there somewhere, brother!

Thanks for the spiritual points, taken on board. But I also take it the door was badly ‘hung’ or the closing mech. isn’t getting enough grip to stay shut? πŸ™‚

When you reached into the closet, you did not end up in Narnia so it is probably just a quirky thing. Jesus stands at our doors and knocks and anyone who opens the door to Jesus he will enter and fellowship with us. πŸ™‚

I like mysteries…could it be the way the house is leaning? I have seen that happen in old mining communities before, but I don’t think that will be the case with your home. Your quote of John 10:7 reminded me of a documentary about shepherding in the Holy Land where sheep are held overnight in an enclosed pen/wall with only one entrance which the shepherd sits at – he is the door. No sheep can escape or wolves enter in past him – just like our Lord. God bless you today brother πŸ™
