A Frog in the Well

Many who live out in the countryside near our little farming town have their own water wells. One such long-time community member, who was a child in the 1950s, shared how the water would occasionally turn foul–with a bad taste and smell.

At that point, mom or dad would say to their youngest child, “Sonny, there’s a dead frog in the well. Get it out.” The boy fetched his rod and reel, tied on a big three prong hook, and dropped a line down into the water.

Sure enough, after some fishing, he pulled up a slimy and stinky dead frog that had somehow fallen into the well and drowned. Minus one decomposing amphibian, the water was soon again fit to drink.

Kind reader, is there a “dead frog” in the well water of your life? Has something foul spoiled a vital source of sustenance?

Fish it out!

Do not be overcome by evil but overcome evil with good.

Romans 12:21 (NIV)

Thank you for reading. 🙏❤️ Prayers and love.

Thank you, Priscilla. You saw another angle here that is brilliant as well—what if we keep drinking the water and say it smells and tastes just fine? This could be a version of willful blindness.

Thank you for being a faithful reader and commenter. God Bless!

Brilliant analogy. I need to ask God to help me see the dead frogs in my life for what they are.

Very good message, David! Straight to the point, with no if’s and’s or but’s about it. 🐸

Yuck! I was just told by a client of mine who he and his friends went up to their hunting cabin. The next morning someone made coffee and it was awful! One guy actually drank the whole cup before they discovered that mice had worked their way up into the tubing inside the maker and died there. Did I say yuck? Yuck!

I like your thinking here, Malcolm. Problems that took days, weeks, months, or even years to develop aren’t necessarily solved in an instant. A thoughtful process is required.
Thank you for sharing. God Bless!

I’ve experienced a well that was polluted by a dead lizard, I think, David – when our daughter was living in Brazil. It seems to me that there are several stages – recognising the problem… analysing the problem… working out a strategy… solving the problem. I guess you can spiritualise each stage.

I had the same thought, Pete. Wasn’t there a way to keep critters out of the well? But my wife reminded me, that when she was a child, her family’s well was ruined by multiple mice 🐁 falling into the water and drowning. Her father had to have a new well dug on their property—one that was better protected.

Cooler weather has arrived. This morning it’s in the 60s. Naturally, it will warm up later in the day. I’m in Marshall visiting Mom. I took her to her eye doctor appointment in Rockwall. The fun part of that is always connecting with Terri and her parents afterwards before driving Mom back home. 450+ miles since Thursday 😃 Blessings 🙏

Yuck! Fishing out that frog makes me wonder just what else might have been down there. What an unforgettable illustration and picture!

Thanks for going the second mile to comment, brother. I have also been stymied by the different ways to share here on WP.

I hope you and Terri are doing well down in Big D. Hopefully, Fall will arrive soon. Blessings!

Good morning, brother. I’m not sure my original comment went through. It always seems simpler to do on the WordPress app than on Google. Anyways, your post resonated with me in a special way today because Mom still has a water well on her property that she relies on for her water needs. I loved your gentle and clever call to examine ourselves and repent from the dead frogs populating our hearts. I pray you and Nancy have a blessed weekend.

Thank you, brother. I like your thought! Heaven’s living water never goes bad or dry. Worldly wells can be easily polluted, but God’s purity remains. Blessings to you and Susan, as well! 🙏🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🇺🇸

That is quite a thought that makes me green around the gills thinking of such a polluted well 🤢 Recently our tap water was polluted with something for a brief time that meant we had to buy drinking water. Spiritually we certainly need to drink only from Heaven’s well to sustain our soul each day. Thank you for this thoughtful devotion today David. God bless you and Nancy today brother 🙏 🇺🇸🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿
