The TV in the waiting room of my doctor’s office shares advice for good health and well-being. One day, while I was sitting there, a commercial came on for a prescription drug that helps lower A1C levels, to prevent type 2 diabetes. The smiling actress, surrounded by people at a party said, “It’s the little wins, baby!”
I quickly thought how this statement applies to sports, life in general, and a person’s walk with God.
In baseball, what wins most games isn’t grand slams, but “small ball”– runs batted in by one and two base hits.
A Hit is a Hit.
In life, it’s mostly small, repeated choices that determine our overall direction and even our destiny. Frankly, unless you and I work on a bomb squad, every single decision we make isn’t all that important.
We don’t live and die on one success or failure.

Pastor and theologian, Eugene Peterson, described the Christian life as a “Long obedience in the same direction.” That’s not quite as catchy as, “It’s the little wins, baby!” or “A hit is a hit,” but shares the same message.
Kind reader, it’s too easy to beat ourselves up for not getting the metaphorical “big win,” but the secret to success is often found in the little victories of our daily agenda.
In the end, “Two steps forward and one step back” isn’t a law of nature–like gravity. It’s possible to keep moving forward, even if at a snail’s pace, toward a worthy destination.
The path of the righteous is like the morning sun, shining ever brighter till the full light of day.
