The Lost Sandal

On June 3, 2025, I discovered a child’s sandal in a parking lot, perfectly aligned with a yellow stripe. Exactly one year later, I found another one, perched perfectly atop a curb.

The plausible explanation is that each shoe accidentally fell out of a car—when someone got in or out. A passerby then picked them up and put them in a safer place.

The metaphorical implication is more profound: some children today are leaving a valuable part of their childhood behind.

There are drawbacks to this digital age.

If anyone causes one of these little ones–those who believe in me–to stumble, it would be better for them if a large millstone were hung around their neck and they were thrown into the sea. Jesus- Mark 9:42 (NIV)

Kind reader, throughout His earthly ministry, Christ placed the highest value on those who were the most vulnerable. It’s safe to say He still feels the same way. Today, and every day, may we point these “little ones” to Him!

    The threat of harmful information reaching children online is as close as the nearest digital device. These children then bring this information to their schools, churches, and neighborhoods.

    You’re welcome, Grant. I see it almost every day as an educator. We have software, like Blocksi and Go Guardian, to keep students from accessing non-school related content on the web. However, when they are at home, many of them have no such filter.

    Oh, such a picture of how easily little ones can be hurt, confused or lost.

    There are many positive developments as well. Regrettably, it seems that some children are spending excessive amounts of time unsupervised on screens. Additionally, there are individuals posing as trustworthy online who are actively attempting to mislead both young and older individuals.

    Really great reminder. It breaks my hurt to think how many young ones are being led astray in our culture. We need lots of prayer warriors and godly leaders.

    You’re absolutely right, Grant. We’ve seen repetitive destructive behaviors and threats by students at school that were directly linked to online sources, like Tik Tock and YouTube.

    Too many parents remain ignorant of their children’s digital lives. Within a few clicks, young people are into things that would give grown-ups dreadful nightmares. I struggle to understand the inaction. Life’s distractions? Entanglements? Sin? Few regulations and even less affordable legal recourse against big tech. Wake up, parents! Get busy and unite, regulators! Take a stand, teachers!

    I know you understand the stakes, Malcolm. It seems more than coincidental to find two lost shoes exactly one year apart. Every generation of children faces their own challenges, but the proliferation of digital media and the screens that go with it creates a whole new world.
