Therefore, my beloved brothers, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that in the Lord your labor is not in vain. 1 Corinthians 15:58 (ESV)
As I set up to share some music at a local nursing home, my shoes kept sticking to the floor. I looked down and clearly saw the outline of something like orange juice that hadn’t yet been mopped up. Later, as Nancy and I sang, every time I picked my feet up I heard and felt it again.
Yet, as I looked out at an appreciative audience of residents, some of whom were unable to clap both hands together at the same time, I realized the floor wasn’t just sticky, so was their faith.
As we sang “Victory in Jesus,” and “Sunshine in My Soul,” it was clear these were more than just words and music to my dear senior friends, they were linchpins of life itself.
Come to think of it, in nursing home ministry there are amazingly few “woe is me” attitudes among the residents. Pretty much everyone knows what they have lost, but they also treasure what they have left.
On the way out of the building, I visited with a man I’ll call Dr. Bill. He spent over 40 years as one of the area’s few psychiatrists. Countless folks with mental illness were helped by this selfless servant, who could have made a lot more money in a larger city.
As I loaded up my gear to leave, I said to myself, “sticky faith and sticky life service, now there’s a great combination!” The Holy Spirit chimed in with, “Go, and do likewise.”
The gray hairs of a long life spent in dutiful service are a crown of glory, and the heart that has stayed true to its anchor needs no other reward. C.S. Lewis
