Only Roosters Crow

It started as a question over coffee: “Do chickens crow, or just roosters?” I answered my wife Dr. Seuss style, “Only roosters crow, as far as I know.” I hedged my response, because I knew if I said, “Yes, only roosters crow,” she would have Googled it immediately. What if there’s a rare breed of crowing hens on some secluded Pacific Island? Then I would’ve looked like a dummy.

Her simple question then became a philosophical one; in this earthly life, what can we know for certain?

Yes, sunrise and sunset, gravity, and fresh air to breathe are almost sure to continue unabated. But what about more slippery unknowns, like the meaning of life, or what happens when we die?

Thankfully, the writer of Ecclesiastes, who was for certain a wise guy, investigated this:

Now that all has been heard; here is the conclusion of the matter: Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the whole duty of man. For God will bring every deed into judgment, including every hidden thing, whether it is good or evil.

Ecclesiastes 12:13-14 (NIV)

Ah, perspective! As a child of God, I belong to the Lord. I was bought at a price and am not my own. (1 Cor. 6:19-20)

Granted, this isn’t something everyone wants to hear–child of God, or not. We mere mortals are apt to believe our lives are in our own capable hands. Yet, those of us who’ve lived awhile, know this isn’t so. Life has a way of bringing us to our knees. That’s why many who seek wisdom for living ask a “Keen-ager”–a senior adult who has weathered many ups and downs.

Thankfully, nursing homes and assisted living centers are filled with “Keen-agers” who have plenty of wisdom on tap, and most of them are willing to share!

So, here’s your assignment: seek out a senior today and ask them if chickens crow, or just roosters, or maybe just have a back-and-forth conversation about life; you’ll both be glad you did.

One generation will commend your works to another; they will tell of your mighty acts.

Psalm 145:4 (NIV)

I know that the experiences of our lives, when we let God use them, become the mysterious and perfect preparation for the work He will give us to do.

You, and at least one other commenter mentioned how crowing just to be crowing might not be a good thing. This reminds me of the verse in Ephesians that says, “Let no unwholesome speech come out of your mouth, but only what is helpful, for building others up. “
Thank you for reading and commenting. God bless!

My mother used to say that her mother used to tell her that “Whistling girls and crowing hens both come to no good ends.” Well, personally I’m glad that girls are allowed to whistle nowadays, and I suppose a hen could crow if she could do it. Women (and men) can speak up when they are backing up the Word of God. It’s not good for anyone just to crow for the sake of crowing. Let’s speak to uplift and help. Thank you for your continued interesting posts.

Google says Keenager starts around 50 years old and attends activities at Senior Centers, etc.. so I am one!

Hmm, I wonder how old you have to be to be a ‘Keen-Ager’.

You’re right about how not everything that crows is wise. One of our neighbors had a rooster for awhile that did not know how to truly crow. He started well, but finished horribly. Thanks for the reminder that not every voice we hear is worth listening to. This idea could be a post in itself. God Bless, brother.

Your right. A commenter,BG, researched the topic and discovered that hens can sometimes mimic roosters, and crow a little too. Thanks for reading and commenting, Sister Super-C

Thank you, Pastor Pete, but I’m sure I picked up the term “Keen-ager” from someone. I enjoy writing for the Sunshine Newsletter. It’s rewarding, and challenging at the same time, to write for a target audience.

Another reader actually Googled if only roosters crow. Apparently, hens can and do crow on occasion. I had no idea. I’m glad I said, “As far as I know.” Thank you for stopping by, Dana! God Bless.

Thankfully, as a keen-ager, I know it is alright to say, “gosh, I don’t know!” (But I still hope no one asks me about chickens!)

Well as an owner of over 300 chickens, which includes 4 roosters, I hear them crowing but cannot actually pinpoint who is doing this. When I am out with them, I see the roosters doing the crowing, but when inside, who knows who might be doing it!

Everything that crows isn’t wise. Some things crow just to make noise. 😃 David, I appreciate you and Nancy ministering to the folks living in the senior places. I am sure they do, too. Way to keep magnifying God in a world that desperately needs Him. Blessings 🙏

Thanks, brother. Our younger generations tend to know more about the latest technologies. So, if I have a computer hardware or software issue, I usually talk to someone who is half my age.
However, the best way to get wisdom for living is to live and choose wisely—as in follow God’s path.
Thank you for being a faithful servant of our Lord Jesus Christ. His best to you, and the Kearns clan. 🙏🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🇺🇸

Thank you for sharing this thoughtful post David. There are many types of wisdom floating around our world, and not all of them will last. The best way to find wisdom that lasts is to ask someone who has been around for a few decades or more. The wisdom of our world is fleeting, but Godly wisdom is eternal. God bless you and Nancy today dear brother 🙏 🇺🇸🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿
